  1. No record of the cam installation. And I don't know anything about the cam's specs/duration. But you can look at it and see that the lobes have been ground, as have the base of the lobes. Thanks again, all.
  2. Thanks for all the feedback. Frankly, I'm more confused than ever. I mean, when the dean of Bay Area Bimmer mechanics says one thing, and you guys say another.... Truth to be told, though, he looked at all the past service records, saw the cam and stopped there. He hasn't laid hands on any other part of the car. Lots to think about and check into.
  3. Broke the cardinal rule of not searching the forums first. It is a bit odd, at first blush, that Mechanic 2 is pinning the blame on the cam. However, the car had a major service and the new carb installed and tuned. (Don't know why I said it got a new distributor; I meant coil). Compression is relatively low across the board at 147. There was a single white smoke incident at start-up, but none since. And a pressure test on the cooling system produced no moisture in the chambers. So discovering the tall cam, Mechanic 2 is arguing that the car can't really be tuned right with a cam, carb and header that don't match.
  4. Hey folks. I took my recently purchased '71 to a second mechanic this week to figure why the motor was still idling so rough and not performing well, even after Mechanic #1 replaced the ignition, distributor and carb, and tuned it to the best of his ability. Turns out that I have a really tall cam in there (which Mechanic #1 missed!) that is not matched well with the rest of my components, including the 32/36 carb and aftermarket header. Without pulling the cam and measuring it, we can't tell its exact specs. But it's been ground significantly from original. Mechanic #2 (well-respected as a top Bay Area BMW specialist) is recommending a stock cam and tii exhaust. I'm curious to know your experiences with various cams. My goal is a spirited daily driver. Not a hot-rod. But the point of owning a 2002 is to have fun, right? Having driven only one stock 2002 that was in mediocre condition, I don't really know what a mostly stock 2002 feels like. Mechanic #2 in convinced that the stock cam and tii exhaust will produce a very pleasant ride. Thoughts from the daily drivers and tinkerers on this board? Is there much value in going with a slightly taller-than-stock cam? I know there are many choices out there. (Please don't ask what he wants to charge to replace the cam and exhaust manifold. I weep just thinking about it.)

  6. Without knowing anything about your car, it's impossible to answer that question. The carbs need to work in synch with the rest of the motor, such as the camshaft, valves, etc.

  9. What does "early'' vs. "late'' mean? I thought that only related to 4-speeds?
  10. First of all, thanks to everyone who participates in this board. It's been a big resource for me and, I'm sure, others. Question: Is there any way to tell - visually from under the car - what kind of 5-speed I have? I was under the car this morning and didn't see any markings, but it was mighty cramped and greasy under there. Can I tell visually whether I have a close ratio 5-speed or a 245/4? Do the cases look different? Is there anything about the performance that would jump out at me? Michael
  11. That's a misleading title, because obviously everything is fixable for a price. What I have is a 74 2002 with retrofitted 5-speed and something of a grinding noise coming from the rear end when the car is in gear. I threw the car up on jackstands today and ran the motor in gear. It appears the sound comes either from the differential itself or the area where the driveshaft connects with the differential. Are there bearings that typically wear in this area. Or could it be that whoever trimmed the driveshaft to fit the 5-speed did a lousy job and things are not fitted/aligned/balanced right? Any thoughts and ideas welcome. Thanks much. Cheers, Michael P.S. The previous owner said he drove the car like this for two years with no problems other than the noise, which is quite loud and annoying, actually.
  12. (3) A vehicle which was manufactured after 1922, is at least 25 years old, and is of historic interest. That's pretty broad. Seems like they hoodwinked the DMV.
  13. Came across a nicely maintained but not-too-special 74-75 02 today with California Historic license plates. Now I'm sure the car has a lot of history. But I didn't realize they gave out historic plates on cars that new. What am I missing here?

  15. Thanks all for the replies. I trust my mechanic implicitly. He's been doing 2002s for 25 years. So I'd be surprised if he put on the wrong cap (he replaced the old one). But I'll raise it with him. Any idea how much Curt's radiators go for these days?
  16. I've had the car about a month. Just completed a major service at a reputable BMW shop. The car originally came with an aftermarket temp gauge mounted on the dash. The garage fixed the original gauge today. The coolant has dropped a little over the past 10 days or so; it's still above the core. But there's also a small leak near the heater control valve. So it's hard to tell where the coolant has gone. We (the shop owner and I) are both a little perplexed by the pressurized system when cold. Seems unusual.
  17. Looking to troubleshoot some weird behavior in my 1971. a. When you take off the radiator cap when the engine is stone cold, you get a big whoosh of air as it depressurizes. I've never noticed that with any other car. b. The motor runs a little hot, at least 2/3 of the way toward the red zone. c. Once and only once, when the car had been sitting for three cool days, it was hard to start and emitted a minute-long plume of white smoke (alas, I did not do a smell test). It's never happened since. d. My mechanic has detected moisture in the air filter area. e. The heater works, but not very well. f. The motor does not idle well. The BMW shop pressurized the cooling system for 30 minutes and pulled the plugs and did not detect any untoward moisture. So there is no clear evidence of a cracked head or blown gasket. But we can't rulel it out either. Something seems amiss. Ideas? Michael
  18. Hi all. On my 1971 2002, there's a button in the console to the right of the ashtray. Mine's been replaced by an aftermarket rocker switch that connects to nothing. What original switch went there? In some pics, I've seen it as round and orange-colored.
