  1. Yep, they are designed to go together and I got the whole shitterie. I'll post the results.
  2. OK, I just bought Jeff Ireland's shifter platform and set-up. His is based on the 320 platform (no diagonal brace, instead an attachment to the tunnel back by the shifter) and sounds like it's pretty dope. Pics and more to follow when I get the stuff. So, I guess nevermind the other items above
  3. When I try to PM, a pop-up tells me that's been disabled on this board....however, I'd like to get any articles/info you have. I can't seem to find a lot of data about the shifter platform; just a lot about fitting the transmission to the tunnel. If you wouldn't mind, send them to wagnerf15@sbcglobal.net. Sounds like getting one of the aftermarket mods is the easiest/best way.
  4. As I start to research the parts and labor required to set up this 5 speed 320i transmission, I find myself riddled with questions. A little help please... 1. Is the stock 320i 5 speed shifter platform a direct fit? Obviously, it'll fit the tranny, but is this the piece I need to line up the shifter in the tunnel, etc? 2. Is the stock piece satisfactory? It's about $70 cheaper than the closest replacement piece and I've already got a LOT of money into this drivetrain..every little bit helps. I know the custom sets are nice, but are they necessary? 3. It looks like the stock platform doesn't have the support bracket like the 2002 platform (the piece that triangulates the whole platform). Is this right? 4. I'll do more research on the shifter, but any favorites? 5. Why do I ask so many f***ing questions? Am I a tard? Engine is complete, I'm a tranny mate away from 2002 action!!!!!
  5. I used your recommendation for the cowl drain tubes (tilux@aol.com) and got them today. Excellent person to deal with and great quality drain tubes for $7 less than BavAuto. Thanks for the hook...
  6. Is "I manually adjusted with a 3 lb hammer" a euphemism for "I beat the shit out of it with a LFH"?
  7. Don't know about the 318 parts, although there are plenty of posts about these swaps. Clearly, the 320i 5 speed will work....many have done it. I'm in the process now. It's a bolt-in swap, just need to make a spot in the tunnel for the slave cylinder and relocate the mount. As for the 3.64 and the 5 speed....seems a little short, although once you get it up to speed you oughta be able to haul ass (assuming you make some power) and get pretty good mpg. But I'll bet someone has done it before. 3.91 seems to be the norm for the 5 speed.
  8. There is no magic to the reservoir pressure bleeder, just a shitload of fluid force fed into the system. Your method should work fine as long as you 1. Keep the system topped up 2. Seal the top WELL so you don't bleed your pressure out. It's really a small amount of pressure to bleed very effectively (I used about 10 psi) The hassle with your method would only be taking off the pressure cap to refill. With a small amount of bleed necessary, there is no reason it won't work. Let us know
  9. What, exactly, did you get off eBay? Was it one like my picture? Or one like the frequently posted upgrade that replaces the stock 4 speed hose from Harry6422? His looks like it's female on both ends and the one from Autohaus looks like female at the master end and male at the slave end. I think I need 2 male fittings. I like the look of the one on ebay.
  10. Will this 320i hose (from Autohaus AZ) work with my new 5 speed slave cylinder? Any experience? If not, where do you get the part?
  11. 2 Questions about my carb, as I approach the setup here: 1. In photo 1, is the vacuum port above the mixture screw simply the hookup for the distributor vacuum advance? Plug it since I have a mechanical dizzy? 2. My Redline 38 DGAS instructions refer to the screws on either end of the carb (picture 2) as "idle mixture screws" (plural) and the screw above the throttle cam assembly as the "idle speed screw". During the tuning instructions, they describe setting the idle mixture screw (singular) to achieve lean best idle setting, then adjust the idle speed screw for desired idle speed. So, is the screw on one end THE idle mixture screw, or do you adjust them together or perhaps sequentially? I understand the carb is not progressive, so do both barrels have an idle circuit? I could muddle through it, but it wouldn't suck to hear some real-world experience. Thanking you....Wagner
  12. I think it's called the "rocker shaft plug doofer"
  13. Beautiful, thanks fellas. I don't think my 38 electric choke needs that at all! Another plug....
  14. The fitting on the block, just below the intake runner on cylinder 4 (pic 1). Water fitting? Does it connect to the intake manifold in pic 2? My pictures before dismantling are inadequate for that area and I can't find any mention of it elsewhere. Thanking you....
  15. The rocker shafts are oil passages and that plug ensures that oil gets out to the bearings and rocker bearings. Without that plug, oil would piss out all over your timing chain, instead of on the rockers where it's needed. The only open shaft is the intake rear (the one that ends by the oil pressure sender).
  16. Well, no, I have no tips. I haven't even begun to research that job yet. My plan is to stuff the bastard in my car with #1 near TDC and install the dizzy when I get everything else hooked up. I'm really not too worried about getting it right, versus worried about whacking that dizzy on some piece of the car and breaking the fucker off. More to follow....
  17. Bolts torqued, valves adjusted, everything re-oiled, tensioner bled, valve cover going on now. Hope I didn't dick anything up. Turns real easy with bolt on crank pulley, so that's a good sign. Looks pretty, though.
  18. Sounds like a good mechanic, too. Welcome to the disease.
  19. Thanks, Rob! 2002haus is next on my list for the 5 speed conversion pieces!
  20. Thanks, Rob! 2002haus is next on my list for the 5 speed conversion pieces!
  21. My new 38 Weber is chomping at the bit to get attached to this puppy. I hope to have that attached in the next week, along with the other finishing pieces. Then, off to the dyno, if I can find one close by. I'm real interested to see what the 38 and a 292 cam will do to HP. My gut feeling is I can get close to the tii's 130. Hopefully, we'll all see soon.
