NOS Bathtub pistons

What compression ratio? Standard '02, 8.5 (flat-top), euro Ti-9.5, USA Tii 9.0, or euro Tii 10.0?

If they're good factory MAHLE or K&S, standard bore have been NLA for years. There are very few M-10s that don't need rebored after 30+ years of use during an engine rebuild. Factor in $40 per cylinder for sleeving to use the standard bore pistons.

Currently BMW only lists the '02, second oversize pistons available. MSRP is $316 per. Max-M/T lists 'em at $283. Deep dealer discount cost is $253.

Hope this helps.

pk first: Well, they sure look like MAHLE BMW bathtub pistons. But, I couldn't find that number in my MAHLE bmw piston catalog. And searching the MAHLE web sites, that number also eludes them too. ....... Get out the measuring stick.

tjones: Congrats. You've identified a typo in the blue Factory Workshop manual on the engine specifications page. Get that man a cigar! (nice to know my eyesight hasn't totally failed me.)

They are not listed in Mahle's catalogs now, because they're NLA.

But they are not 2002 pistons, they are STD size for an 84mm bore

So these appear to be STD size 1.6L pistons, I think you can read the 83.97 imprint on the top. Would have helped to see the rest of the label on the box.

The 1600 118 head uses a 'bathtub' shape dome piston, but obviously it's smaller diameter than the 2.0L piston for the 121 head.

And the early 1800's use a very very similar piston but with a different pin height, to go with the longer stroke. Again, seeing that label would let us help you more.

Consider this if you will:

OK, let's assume they are 1600 pistons. (Maybe 1800 based on pin placement, but let's think positive) Obviously High Compression based on the size of the "pop-up". Could these be for the original 1600Ti??? An uber rare car if there ever was one. Talk about special!

And in today's postings is the story of BMW creating, and opening, a special department for Classic Motorsports Division. I think a 1600Ti just might qualify.

Your inquiry/timing couldn't be better. Determine exactly what pistons you have. Contact the Classic Motorsports Department and ask 'em if they'd be interested in your pistons.

Then you could sell 'em or trade 'em.

PS. I'm not up on 1800 stuff at all. Could they be for an 1800Ti$A??

Hey, I found what they are! (there's three sets for sale now on Swiss ebay, look at item 260508361956)

These are 9.5:1 for the Neu Klasse 1800ti, which made 110 HP @ 5800 with 2 sidedraft Solex 40 PHH (these would be great for someone making a 1.8L stroker by using an 80 mm 2002 crank in their 1600 block.)

Mac was pretty close with the 1800tisa guess, but those were 10.5:1

For reference, the standard NK 1800 was 8.6:1 and made 90 HP with its Solex 38 PDSI

I used to have a NK 1800, and my owner's manual (French language) included a lot of detail, even the complete jetting & setup for the Solex carbs! It was a Florida color 1966 and I sold it to Chris Burd decades ago (I think he's the guy who originated MidWest02 fest?) It was pretty worn out by that time, but still pretty cool.
