Scott Sturdy's '68 project

Disappointing day.

Car has not been charging and just running off the battery. New Alternator, new voltage regulator, checked grounds, and even made secondary grounds to the sheet metal. Still nothing and even put the old alternator back on to see if the new one was bad. no such luck.

Guess it's time to tow it to a professional and spend some money.

On my trip around the block today the clutch felt weird, hopefully it's just some air in the system, but with my luck something is all screwed up.

F#@*!

Does the L on the dash light up? I'd replace the bulb in there/check continuity with a multimeter before going through the trouble of taking it to a pro. My car wasn't charging, and the L was lit, turned out I was missing one wire on the alt (e21 alt, internally regulated)

When I took out the gauge cluster there was no bulb holder for the ALT light so I hooked up a dash mounted Volt gauge. Reads 12 volts and I think it should read over 13 when running. Headlights don't even brighten when I rev engine.

Since the engine was out when I got the car I'm sure there's just some wire I didn't know to attach. I need to get a friend to bring their 02 over to compare side by side.

TODAY WAS A GOOD DAY!

Fixed the problem with the charging system. turned out someone spliced/fixed some of the wires that go from the alternator to the voltage regulator. So I re-did these three wires and presto, the volt gauge reads about 13.7! YAY!

Also fixed the exhaust leak at the header. seems there was an old gasket I didn't see so the header never sat flush to the engine. How'd I miss that????

next up: Tach isn't working, fuel gauge isn't reading right, clutch needs to be bled again, need to replace leaky valve cover gasket.

Well, with the megamuffler installed, it's just a matter of time before I get a warning from the local police ;-)

Scott - looking good with that stinger tip! Let's get a sound byte.

Congrats on fixing the charging issues.

Did a few little things today. Added third brake light. I don't really like to add these but they are a big safety bonus on roundies.

Installed the vintage Sebring style mirror I found on ebay.

And of course, had to add some stickers ;-)

I've been doing so much planning for V@V that I haven't had a whole lot of time to work on my car.

Took the wheels to a guy who does media blasting and powder coating. Only $35 per wheel and I think they look pretty darn good.

Took the front bumper off today. Of course I had to use the cutting wheel to get the bolts off. What would I do without my trusty angle grinder?

Took the car for a drive with some 02 buddies. We were on the road for about 3 hours and the car did great.

For some reason, I missed hearing your car run with that stinger.

UPDATE

Just had late model rear subframe and diff installed. I am trying to do as much of the work on this car myself, but that diff and subframe were just too darned heavy for me to man-handle. Money well spent at Motorsport Connections http://motorsport-connections.com/ .

They also put new subframe and trailing arm bushings in.

Did a little more work on the car. Mounted the little known BMW option 'bottle opener' on the rear and put on the '68 plate. Added the Alpina style flat black with a rattle can. Painted the stress bar red. put on my distressed Alpina badge on the hood. Put on the headlamp screens I got from Moss Motors.

I think that's enough damage for now.

Moved the gauges from under the dash to the top of the dash. The alien tentacle is covering the wires.

Also had to make some replacement seat straps for the old racing seat bottom. Replacements were made from old seat belt and should work fine.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
