installing windshields - what do u uses for sealant when installing the gaskets?

you don't. there is no sealant involved.

I know what the manual says. If you want a big mess, follow the manual.

I have installed many windshields without any sealant and never had a leak. You should have no problem at all with a new OEM seal without sealant.

i've had front and rears on 2 cars installed....never used any goop and have never had a leak...

No goop. Make sure you use a genuine BMW seal that has the extra flap to cover the top edge of the dashboard. The "chrome" lockstrip insert will spread the gasket apart when installed.
