02 weight: interesting

Just got out our scales and weighed an 02.

Car-1976 us spec car. Front bumper delete, still has big rear bumper and all reinforcements. Has Recaros and full interior. No sunroof. All trunk trim and spare tire and tool kit/jack etc. All steel panels, 14" panasports. Half tank of fuel. Battery in front.

Overall weight: 2334

Weight balance 54.1 percent over front axle, 45.9 over rear

Heres the kicker. with the batt relocated (actually just moved and placed for this exercise) the weigh balance becomes 52.5 percent over front axle and 47.5 percent over rear. So this does improve things a bit.

Again this is with the front bumper removed.

We weighed a 69 1600 a while back and with the just the carpet removed and no rear seat, but half tank of fuel, it weighed 1968 pounds. Forgot to note corner or f/r distro.

My 1600-02 with 6 point cage and guted interior, battery in the trunk is just over 1900 LBS. Front to rear is around 52/48 IIRC. The car is very balanced with spring rates in the front. It is almost a shame it is a dedicated track car with its great handling.

Pathetically, I'm a touch over 2000 with a

multipoint cage and quite a bit of gutting...

I'm starting to wonder if maybe Mike loaded the cage with

lead to make minimum weight in ITB a long time ago...

The early 1600s are the lightest of the series. Early 1600s and 2002s with the heavier longneck diff also have a better balance front/rear.

Lighter clutch set-up

lighter crank

lighter pistons

lighter brake booster

lighter starter

lighter seats

lighter doors

lighter bumpers

lighter calipers

lighter drums

lighter half shafts

and probably a bunch of additional lighter stuff

The 66-67 1600 is lightest of all with the 6 volt 1600s coming in the lightest.

Betcha the 6V 1600 would be lighter if you changed out the electrics to 12v (with alternator, M3 starter and small battery).
