Just kidding,

Probably need #8 on the lower diagram. It is the oring that seals the sending unit. the sending unit just twists out.

You can get it here

among other places.

Also make sure the vent line, and others, from the tank is in proper order.

It's a tii so no carbs, yeah the blue tube leads from the plastic air box in the trunk to the engine compartment. Like I said I can't see anything wrong but my wife refuses to ride in the car anymore which is fine with me, I just want it fixed.

Thanks,

Ray

Any wetness on the tank, top, half up on the side where the seam is?

Filler boot intact and securely fastened to the gas tank tube and the filler neck?

Vent tube secure? Do you have it to the vapor tank or down through the trunk?

Hoses secure to the pick-up and return?

Gaskets good around the sender and the pick-up?

Trunk seal good?

All holes from the trunk to the back seat area plugged, even the big holes on the side? Some plug these with some type of foam.

It's a long shot for you, but - I had a persistent gas smell only when I ran the heater blower. Seems the PO miswired the heater when replacing the dashboard and the fan was sucking air out of the cabin and from the trunk along with a strong gas odor. I doubt ur using a heater in Marin Co. but it's a shot.

For me it was the sending unit, bad seal, I cut a new gasket and used a little permatex (for use with gas) that solved it. You would have never known to look at the tank, but during my experimentation,I Filled the tank full and then pressed on the top of the tank, sure enough a little pin hole was allowing gas to escape and stink up the cabin.

Anything you want, all you have to do is try.

Just FYI, the reason the smell is worse when you open the windows is because you are creating a vacuum that sucks in air from where the fuel smell is, probably the trunk. I have the same problem. So far, changing the seal on the fuel sending unit did not help. But it's a quick and cheap fix that might work. You can get the part at any dealer for a few bucks. Your gas tank might also have a leak around its seam. Good luck.
