drive gear for their unique diffs (3.90 on the '76; 4.11 on the 1600s) so be advised if they're used on other 2002s, the speedo will be off.

Hadn't considered that...Is going into a 76; the one in the 76 is bad, and frankly, I've always preferred the black of my years ago 69. Being a non-math-major, anyone out there with a formula of what the actual vs. shown speed is using the early speedo with the 76 diff? Or am I better off to send the 76 off for the $100+ repair? Thanks, Mike for the heads up. Dave V. in NC

According to my admittedly shaky math, you're gonna have about a 9.3% error using a 3.64 speedo with a 3.90 rear end. If you're looking for the early instrument look (silver center) you could...

Find a speedo from a 1600 (4.11 final drive) and the error would be lessened

Find another '76 speedo and swap faces with an early style speedo--the trick is removing the needles with out damaging 'em or the instrument face

Bite the bullet and send the speedo off for repair....but...

If the odometer isn't working, there should be lotsa archives on repair--it's usually the plastic drive gear that's cracked and is spinning freely on a shaft it should be locked to. Superglue can sometimes fix that; new gears can be bought.

If the speedo needle is flopping all over the place, my November Roundel column covers how to repair...even if the speedo isn't working at all, it might be something easy if you take it apart and look....worth a try.

cheers
