brake booster question

Recommended Posts

After replacing all the pedal box and brake linkage bushings, my brake pedal still moves about an inch before activating the brakes.

From what I can see (feel & hear) there is just takeup before the booster pushrod hits the master cylinder piston. Doesn't seem to be hydraulic... I have a firm brake pedal and good brakes after the takeup.

Question: is the pushrod threaded for length adjustment? Any other suggestions? It's a tii booster if that helps.

Thanks,

Steve

Here is a picture of the adjustment in the pedal box. The configuration on the brake booster is the same.

If everything is hooked up, you need to loosen the jam nut at the pedal box and at the brake booster. You notice the flat spot son the rod. These flat spots allow you to turn the rod with an open (spanner) wrench. I forgot the size 10mm I think.

Brakes activate late may = Linkage

Soft pedal = poorly adjusted rear brakes

Pedals that are soft but pump up to solid = air in lines

Thanks C.D.

I think the rears are good, based on the ebrake lever, but I'll double check.

Off topic, I was meaning to ask about your profile -- Is that "South West Connecticut minus Darien"? I ask because I have a family member who may or may not be from that area...

Hi Bill,

Thanks. I did adjust the pull rod at the pedal box end to get the pedal heights level. My original question was about the pushrod in the brake booster itself, whether I could unscrew it to lengthen it or if I need shims behind the master cylinder piston or something. I think Steve answered that question -- I'm going to go home and try it. Hopefully I can wait til after work...

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
