Need help installing mobile tradition repair CD

THIS is getting frustrating. I'm hoping there is an easy fix with this. The cd installs without any problems, but when I attempt to open the program, I get a "system error &80004005 (-21.....) unspecified error"

I tried it on another computer - same problem. I'm fairly good with computers and am stumped by this. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you using Acrobat 7.0.x? I've found that you have to use the 6.0.x tree from Adobe otherwise you get that error. Currently I have 6.0.4 installed on my system.

Also you'll have a problem if you have more than 512MB of RAM in your computer.

Well I removed Acrobat 7.x and installed 6.0.x and now have a new and different error.

The infamous runtime 2004 Not enough memory.

I did a little reading and found out that it is because I have 1 GB of RAM. Changing the compatability of the program did not solve it. I certainly don't want to remove my RAM just to run this little program....HELP

I ran accross this message a while back and looked it up on google. At least one guy got it to work by modifiying boot.ini to limit the system memory to 512 -- kind of ugly but it *should* let you run the software

edit: this should give you two OS choices upon boot up -- one is the regular full ram version and the other would be the ram restricted version -- so when you want to run the CD you'd need to choose the ram restricted configuration.

Here is a link to all the messages

and here is the meat of the fix

best of luck!!

Thanks for the replies, all!

I'm still working on this--someone on another message board suggested

editing my boot.ini file to limit the amount of system memory used to 512MB

when I want to use this software...

I'm still trying to figure out the precise way to add the switch, and be

able to switch it back again.

More to follow--if I can figure that out; or if I hear back from BMW...

Thanks again!

Hey, fellow posters:

I figured it out!

This doesn't solve the compatibility issue, but it's a good work-around!

Thanks to some kind help from "Jim" on the "Software - Other Software" board

over at Dell Support (where I also had posted my problem).

I modified the boot.ini file as follows:

Old:

[boot loader]

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP

Professional" /fastdetect

New:

[boot loader]

timeout=5

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP

Professional" /fastdetect

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP

Professional 512MB" /fastdetect /maxmem=512

I modified the file by copying the line beneath [operating systems] and

pasting it as a new line below. Next, I added the switch "/maxmem=512" to

limit the operating system from using more than 512MB. Next, I modified the

text for the second OS line to indicate the lesser RAM configuration.

Works perfectly!

Thanks again!

To run the BMW repairs without needing the CD do this:

1) Install the program and get it working using the tips above

2) Copy over the PDF and PICS folder over to a location on your C:. In my case I chose to put it in with the ETK/ETM files in the BMW95 folder, C:\bmw95\pics and C:\bmw95\pdf

3) Open bmw.ini in C:\programme\BMW (assuming default install path)

Edit this section which will point at your CD-ROM

[Pics]

Path=F:\pics\

[PDF]

Path=F:\pdf\

Change these lines to the path on your C:\ (Its NOT case sensitive)

[Pics]

Path=C:\bmw95\pics\

[PDF]

Path=C:\bmw95\pdf\

Now the Repair manual does not need the use of the CD-ROM. Perfect for setting up on a small laptop for use in the garage.

FYI, I think we should FAQ all of this. The problems listed here are quite common.

  • 2 months later...
I rolled my Adobe back to 6.01 and edited the boot.ini for the 512MB option.

I still get the "Run Time 2004, out of memory" error. Are there any other tricks?

I'm running XP Pro, SP2

P4 3Ghz

1GB RAM

Thanks

Chad.

Just to verify...you did reboot and select the 512MB version on bootup, right?
