Aussie n00b on forum...

Hey all,

My name is Todd, I am based in Geelong in Victoria, Australia.

I have recently joined after spending a little bit of time looking about on here for info for my 1974 2002... My car is 9 years older than me... I love the shape after I saw a 2002 Baur at an auction when I was about 10... I still remember the bright orange car like it was yesterday.

Car specs -

(please go easy - I'm not totally technical on 2002's...)

Australian Delivered

1974 BMW 2002 Automatic

Polaris Silver

Blue interior

Engine:

Rebuilt a while ago before I got it...

Weber carby (since been totally rebuilt)

Head flowed and mild cam (no specs :()

5 spd conversion (pffft! Who drives Auto's!?!)

drive shaft rebuilt

2 1/4" exhaust

Koni Racing shocks

King Springs (aussie company)

E30 Rims

BFG 195/60/14's

This was my first car... after storing it for a few years while I had a 2004 Mini Cooper S as a company car, I left that company and now my 2002 is my daily driver (but I dont drive it far)

My car is a fun car rather than a genuine number car, so Im looking at ideas for modifying and other stuff...

In the next few months I plan on respraying the car, gettting all new trims for it, rebuilding the motor - two options available right now - I think I will discuss this with forum goers at a later date for opinions... plus more!

I love my car, and Im stoked to find a forum with like-minded people to discuss options with me.

I look forward to reading what other people are up to and getting some good advice on what to do with my car.

Welcome Todd... it sounds like you've been lurking for a while so you probably already know this, but we've recently undergone a major overhaul to the site, so pardon our dust while we work things out. Of course if you have any suggestions or issues (and this goes for everyone) please report them in the Site Suggestions and Questions forum. enjoy!

Im a hge fan of online forums for help with cars, so I have seen some pretty well functioning forums...

I have never been on the forums on this site, but used some of the tips from the original site and the links a few times....

Are there many other Aussies?

G'day mate, nice 02!

I'm in Melbourne so not too far away at all. Have you joined the BMW CCV yet? If your in Melbourne sometime soon, i'm sure we could arrange a meetup :-) its great seeing other peoples 02's around here.

By they way, i recently sold a guy a Fjord Blue 73tii and i think he was from Geelong, so your not alone down there!

Also, email me and ill give you the name of a guy with all the performance parts you want, he can rebuild your engine as well. He built my car - click link on my sig to see specs :-)

Good luck with it..

Tom!

I introduced myself to you on cardomain :)

Im not 100% sure on the colors of the 2002... but your old car wasnt an IMMACULATE Tii with original alloys etc.?

The guy is a youngish maybe early 30s with euro plates VTW002? If that was your car is awesome! I just saw it a few weeks ago. I was with my mum in her BMW Conv. and I was like "CHASE HIM! CHASE HIM! That car is the best!" She didnt get it :P

It would be great to catch up! I have been toying about joining the BMWCCV, but have not got around to it. I just might send a cheque this evening :)

What part of Melbourne are you in?

hes put an Ansa exhaust and some fog lights on it since we had it. It was a nice car and as soon as we decided to sell it, it developed a bit of a hickup on hard accelleration. Hopefully the guy has sorted it all out though - he knew what he was getting into, i believe he was an mechanical engineer. I'm located in Surrey Hills - Eastern Suburbs.

BMW CCV is a great source for enthusiasts and Doug Reed has a wealth of knowledge and expertise on 02's.

Feel free to email me: cmorriso at bigpond dot net dot au (replace with @ and .'s) and i will give you the details for the performance parts.

Cheers mate,

Tom

Hi Todd, your car looks good. I'm in Melbourne, Moonee Ponds. The guys Tom recomends are good and I often use Jaymic in the UK (jaymic.com)for parts (shipping is not too bad even with the Aussie paseo). Also your local dealer can get most things but check the net first to compare prices. Also http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do is a great site for BMW part numbers, that way you can go to the dealer and get the exact part you want (if its still available). Good Luck with it. Thanks Tom & Shaun,

I will send you an email when I get a chance. I am just in the middle of a renovation of my kitchen and bathroom, so Im pressed for time right now to sit down and write an email with questions etc. I get up to Melbourne a fair bit, so one day we will have to catch up!

My email address is > contactme at toddknight dot com dot au < if that makes sense...

Tom, that car was sensational... I will try to catch the guy next time he has it out. I sent an email to your hotmail account you have listed on here.

I had a good look at TIIBMW on cardomain, that looks sensational!

I added both of you to my friends... I only registered today, so I dont have many shots or details of the car on there. My car has some rust in it, but as far as I can see, it is pretty dry in the floor etc. Im sort of doing it up as I can afford it, plus it is a daily driver... so it is knocked about a bit.

Speak soon,

Todd

together by tape and putty and a good overspray job.

As far as I can tell, my car is pretty dry... what is the best places to look for rust? I have some bubbles in the lower doors and around the rear right guard - just bubbles. Other than that I'm not 100% sure... I have had a look at the car on a hoist and it seems *pretty* dry. (I'm no expert!)

There was some rust in the spare tyre well, but it has been patched quite dodgy, so we are going to patch that up properly and paint the underside of the car nicely. I have some oil leaks in the motor, but like I said, I want to rebuild that ASAP. When I get the motor rebuilt, I will get a lot of the body cleaned up and I will most likely drop all of the suspension out and replace all of the bushes, mounts etc.

I have had all the strut towers looked at by a suspension place and they say it is in pretty good condition. So hopefully that is the case.

We dont have the salt on the road like they do in other countries as our winters are never that cold.

There are a fair few 2002's in my town actually - I meant to say that earlier - there is a round light one in pretty average condition with a carby'd turbo motor in it - plus a few others.

Thanks for the welcome.
