wrong grill....need correct grill??

Recommended Posts

Hey folks. So I'm kinda confused here.  I bought a new kidney grill that was advertised as correct for a '73 2002 years back when planning my current project. I went to install it today and it's not even remotely the right dimensions. Furthermore, the side grills do not fit the car as well. The full history of the car is as such: bought a '73, floor pans too far gone for my body guy to want to do, so we found a shell in great shape that was way cheaper than paying him to do body work(1k) so he just had to paint it. I believe the shell was advertised as a '72, I assumed it was a roundie and 72/73 did not have enough differences to matter. So now it feels like up is down, left is right, freedom is slavery. Was there a year to year difference in the front grills to this degree? Was I sold a shell under false pretenses? Somebody help me out. Ultimately, I just need the correct grills for the shell I have. Thanks.

Modell 73 (74-76) were squaretail cars with the black plastic grilles and larger center kidney. 68-73 02s were roundies with chrome grilles and the more slender kidney.

You have the later grilles & kidneys, with an early nose.

That being said, its almost impossible to buy nice chrome grills cheap. Complete chrome grill sets often sell for $1500+ USED.

Please note there are 2 version of the chrome grills, deep (Early cars) and shallow (middle cars) headlight buckets. I believe you want the shallow buckets.

The Vietnamese company Bumper Automobile is starting to make reproductions. Maybe get a quote from them.

The confusion probably came that the front nose panel changed in 08/1973, i.e. in 1973 there are cars with the early grills (which you need) and with later grills.

I have a set of NOS grills (left, center and right) grills (one of the grills have a small repair during a damage from storing), but will not be visible once you put the black slats. I can't use it because it is for US car (shallow grill), and my car is Euro version. So if you're interested PM me.
