Getrag 245 Shift Selector problem

I will second this.

 

I had a 4- speed that David Lumbra rebuilt.

 

It NEVER leaked.

 

It's the only one I've ever seen that didn't.

 

I do think that the 5 speed's brutal reverse detent spring is partially to blame for the 

245's tendency to leak so much.

I had to replace the shift shaft in my 245 because it snapped, it was not a simple process. I had to make a tool to separate the 3 case parts, you also need a good 3 jaw puller. To remove the rear case section the transmission must be in 2nd gear. Then carefully use a punch to press the pins out of the levers without hitting the gears.

There is a design fault with the box, as the rear of the shaft is not supported behind where the cross dowel pins are drilled. It flexes here and breaks through the hole. Mine snapped there, and the first replacement I found was cracked and bent there. Finally found a good one. If you look at later boxes there is a support sleeve / bushing at the back. So I made an oilite bronze bushing to fit. 
The flexing is probably what causes the seals to fail quickly. 
Also check the casing isn’t cracked where the seal goes in. A guibo that fails can damage that part of the case.

I should have followed up on the resolution to my problem. The end of the shaft fits into a bearing in the case. This bearing was worn, allowing the shaft to flop around. That, and we discovered that the BMW seal was a better fit than aftermarket seals (e.g., Elring).

That is what I’ve done with a bronze oilite bushing, but from the inside whilst case was apart. To replace snapped selector shaft.
