RE: Plastic Fuel Line Routing 71 2002 Firewall Area

I recently purchased a 71 2002 and smelled fuel inside the car. Turns out someone had used conventional rubber fuel line in place of teh correct plastic fuel line along teh passenger side rocker. They had glued the carpet to the rubber fuel line and the glue was breaking down the rubber, which I believe was causing the rubber to permeate fuel odor. I purchased the correct fuel line from BMW but when trying to route it through the firewall I noticed that the fuel line and evaporator line were going through 2 separate holes. The evaporations line runs being the center console and comes through much further towards the center. The previous owner had the fuel line running through much further towards the passenger side behind the cylinder head area. What is the correct location for these lines? I would appreciate anyone's advice here.

The clear plastic line does originally go through that recessed hole near the end of the head toward the center of the firewall.

(Just like Buckeye said while I was typing!)

I’ve had the plastic line crack and leak on an 02 I had in the past so beware.  I could never understand why they chose to run the fuel line through the interior of the car.

Many, many topics on this including several of my own.  It seems nearly every year is a little different.  Fuel line always ran inside the car behind center console and out near the valve cover.   Return line was a hard line outside along the drivers side rocker.  Vent line in later cars ran from trunk along with the fuel line and either came out on the passenger side of the firewall ('73-4) or along with the fuel line ('75-6).

And with an engine mounted fuel pump, sucking from the tank. (none pressurized line)

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.
