Dieseling

Good afternoon, I went out for a quick spin, pumped some gas and came home. No cutting out at stops anymore however it did not like going up the hill to my house. It wanted to shut off and started bogging. Once I got back to level it ran fine again. once I shut the car off it tried to keep running. I’m not overheating at least that’s what the gauge is saying.

 

I remember reading in a book about dieseling. Condition where the heat of the engine would ignite the fuel causing it to keep running. I have gone thru the cooling system. New rad and new hoses properly bled the system. I got my thermostat from IE. I got the temp 75 should I go for a different temp? Anyone familiar with this issue?

What idle speed do you have your carb at?
 

It’s idling at 15/1600 in park or neutral. When I shift into drive or reverse it tends to drop idle significantly. it ends up going down to about 10/1100. I have tried to idle at 1000 in p/n but it stubbles and dies in r/d.

NGK BP6ES?

I’m gonna have to check that again, I can’t remember. is there a brand you recommend?

The car would die approaching a stop. Since then I reset timing to 25btdc at 2800. Went to base setting on the Weber and got it to the smoothest I think it was idle mix at 2 1/4 turns

 

Add: it ran good for a bit but as I said before I started going uphill and I started to lose power. maybe the dizzy wasn’t tightened properly. I’d have to recheck

Sorry, you are not really responding to my questions. This is an automatic (yes/no)? What do you mean by "base" setting on your Weber? At what RPM was that setting the smoothest? What is your timing at idle?

Automatic: yes

Base setting on Weber:
mixture screw 2 turns out
idle speed 1 1/2 in
My settings
Mix screw 2 1/4 out
Idle speed I don’t remember

When I adjusted timing I was at 25btdc at 2800rpms

I have not checked timing at idle.

honestly it’s my first 02 and first old car. Going by the book hasn’t helped too much

I suggest you check your timing at idle, and check your idle speed. Should be around 800 rpms. But, these questions may not have anything to do with your reported problem of lack of power up hill. Has this problem ever happened before? Have you recently changed any thing with your engine? What do you mean when you say that the car “wanted to shut off”?

 

You may want to drive through the same route again to see if the problem re-occurs. Sometimes the things are transitory.

Sounds like your car needs a good tune. Your car will be idling on the transition jets and the additional engine speed at idle will mean that the engine will be inclined to (appear to) keep running as there is quite a lot of stored potential energy in the flywheel, the added benefit of additional fuel and air via the carb having the throttle plate too far open and maybe some hot carbon/ hot bits of spark plug. 

 

A good tune, including timing and idle mixture will help you idle at a lower speed. This will help with your dieseling as it should remove a couple of the factors present.
