Please critique this underbody

BMW was fighting the 5mph 'no damage' requirement.  

 

The rule was that the car had to withstand a 5mph collision with no damage.

Well, there's no structure to the ass end of a 2002 at all, so they just kept adding metal

to distribute the force into the rear fender arch and also had to add that box to keep the quarter from

buckling, even so.  Because while the bumper and bumper shock were quite stout,

they then had to add something to hang the shocks off of.

 

The E21 rear is completely revised in the trunk.  Not necessarily improved, mind you, but revised.
