I'll gently squish / deform them (using a punch / small chisel) - making sure not to scar the block surface, til they come out. I replace with new ones, gently tapped in to place w a brass mallet or punch. They're available from BMW still.

I learned this tip from another BMW friend while wrenching on an M20...

Insert something like an allen wrench or socket then use a set of Vise Grips to twist the dowel pin out.
