1974 2002tii Speedometer

Recommended Posts

Hello,

So, the last gear in my odometer was broken, I pulled the gauges out, took it all apart, fixed it, and now the speedometer is not working. It sounds like it is rubbing, so I am going to pull it apart again and I think by centering the 'magnet' it will stop that rubbing sound.

BUT

The speedometer needle fell off... anyone know how much I need to wind that spring before I put it back on? I was hoping there would be terminoligy like.

'Let the spring unwind, attach needle at 80 MPH, wind back to the pin'

Any ideas :-)

IIRC when I had to work on the speedo needle on my '69 when the needle shaft broke off near the hub, the needle came to rest between the P and the H in MPH at the bottom of the gauge face .  So you could simply position the needle at that spot, press it on the shaft and then carefully lift it over the stop.  That will get you about as close to an accurate speedometer as you'll get without sending it off to a specialist.  Just be careful and don't break the needle!

cheers

I had the some what the same problem with my 1976, the needle broke and I tried to glue the needle back together with no luck, called around and to buy a rebuild unit was $195.00 and repair shop quoted $250.00 to rebuild my unit. BMW of South Atlanta wanted around $250.00, with shipping and 15 business days to deliver. Ordered one from www.wallothnesch.com and total cost was $159.94 plus $4.79 for Foreign Transaction fee, ordered the Speedometer on 8/23/15 arrived at my door on 8/26/15 by noon, I’m located in Northern California. I ordered the W=1, 30 for cars with 3, 64:1 final drive ratio. If your car has the W=1, 39 with the 3, 90:1 final drive ratio it’s a little cheaper.

Good luck

try north hollywood speedometer.  vdo specialist.  they will calibrate it to your final drive ratio...not just the diff...including your tire size.  it makes a difference.  mine came back looking brand new, and it works like new.

Mine came back reading 2 to 3 mph high.

Grr....

Ray

Stop reading this! Don't you have anything better to do?? :P
