Sharing Some Vintage Race Shots

Nope, schnitzer box flares and a wing.  I knew Ertl drove the car but not aware Quester had driven it.  That car was a problem child with the rear mounted radiator, I wonder if they moved it back up front for this race.  They never could get enough cooling with it back there.  285 laps is impressive.  12 hours is even more impressive.  Finishing up work on the rear wings now, this is from yesterday afternoon.  Just needs to be blocked and prepped, ready to mold a new one.  I'll have to try and do some research to find the date of the race.  Thanks again, yet another stone gets turned over.  Awesome.

Amazing pictures - again!  Thank you for sharing them.  Picture of the white/blue 2002ti behind the VW Beetle has a rear window sticker with "Denzel".  Is that somehow related to the same Denzel firm that offered modified VW engine components?

Gewonne...

Did some searching on the old www - This was, I believe the cars second race event.  If it was running on only two cylinders, amazing it did finish the race.  Twelve hours is a long time to run a car at its limit - makes you appreciate what the cars do that run at Lemans for 24 hours.

"The 12 hour race for Group 1 and 2 cars at Zeltweg was considered a great success. The fights took place in Group 1, but the overall honours went to Group 2 with Quester, Ertl and Rieder who covered 285 laps with their BMW 2002 Alpina. The Swiss Hollinger Hugentobler and Truninger finished second in their 1600 Alfa GT Junior.

Frontrunners Finotto and Facetti had to retire after three hours with a broken radiator, so that left the race to the Alpina BMW. Harald Neger’s BMW had been on fire, but more serious problems befell Ghislotti and Bassini; the first pitted with gearbox troubles while Bassini’s Alfa refused to start after a stop.

The Alpina car did not run troublefree either; first a stop for various problems, but at the 11th hour the car only fired on 2 cylinders. He was sent away hoping that the engine would last for another hour. It did, and despite Hollinger could regain some lost ground the Alpina 2002 won with 7 laps in hand."

Nope.  Great pictures by the way - love the black and white (and) these are particularly good ones.

My car was driven by Thomas Betzler and Harald Ertl at Zandvoort in 1974 - 2nd place thank you very much, but then, "if your not first your last" (WF/Ricky Bobby)

#29 - August 11, 1974.  They must have had the car running well then since this is just a few weeks after the 1st place at the Osterreichring (12 hour Martha Grand National Race just a few weeks prior).  Thanks again for the info on that one.  I am going to ping AlpinA with it and see what they have to say....

Nope, hadn't heard that or seen the brochure.  I thought I had pretty much everything mapped out where the car ran, who drove it etc.,  The fact that Dieter Quester drove it to (what I know currently) its only victory make me really happy.  Obviously there are a number of guys (and gals) that have piloted BmW's over a long period of time, from my perspective he is BmW motorsport royalty (along with Hans Stuck).  I have to say that it amazes me sometimes that the car is in my garage.....now I only need to finish the mother f*&%cker!!!!!!!  2016 is approaching rapidly so I am picking up the pace on work.....Still, the devil is in the details and can't cut corners (which equates to time + money).
