Camshaft identification "R1"

I have found a camshaft with the following markings in the timing gear end.

BMW R1 D

Is there anyone who can assist me in finding out what it is.

Stock/ fast road or ?

Crazy.

Only help I can offer is to do a quick measure of the base circle

and the top of the lobe and see how much cam lift it has.

Just what I need.

I looked i bit closer. On the edge, next to the timing mark.

There is a stamped mark that could look like a "2"

That means stock....right?

I will take meassurements later today.

I have just measured the lobe lift on the mysterious camshaft.

The lift measures 7,2mm.

According to the Schrick catalogue it is similar to their 284 cam.

I think I will try it together with my twin 40mm DCOE carbs.

Please comment if any you have other suggestions or ideas.

That's not bad at all- that's over 10mm at the valve.

If you look at the base circle (the 'back' of the lobe)

is it slightly raised above the casting material, or slightly below?

Below would suggest a regrind, whereas above would mean it's

an 'original' grind on a new blank.

Cool. In all the junk I've ever accumulated, none of it had a

'more than stock' cam. Lots of 'less than stock', though...

if it's not shrick (which it will say "dr. schrick" on the casting) it's probably a 292 regrind as most regrinds make up for a lack of lift with duration.

Yes, i believe that it is a regrind.

Now I need to find some oversize excentrics for adjusting the valve clearance.

What about valve to piston clearance. Is there room for the valves when using a cam with 7,2mm lift.

ireland engineering sells those

Utilizing either the 8.3:1 or the 9.5:1 stock pistons, neither should have any clearance issues with a little 292 regrind like that.
