F/S 1967 BMW 1600-2 Driving Project $3300 OBO Louisville KY

I've got a pretty sweet car. it's an original numbers matching 1600-2. I bought it at a time when I thought I was going to be getting rid of my 73 automatic / would be going slower with my m20 project. Plans have changed and I'm trying to go full throttle on the m20 project. I hate to see this go, but it's time.

Supposedly the oldest surviving VIN with a sunroof. It's running and driving, but is currently sans carpet/headliner. Car comes with a headliner and most of the parts to re assemble the interior. Just replaced the carb (brand new weber single bbl) and it runs well - just needs some fine tuning.

Shell is in good shape - minor surface rust, and a few small holes in the floor, but nothing serious.

Comes with a boat load of spare parts specific to 1600-2/1602. If you're serious I'll email you the list.

Information on the car (as written by the P.O.)

"1967 BMW 1600-2 - Sahara on tobacco

4 speed manual trans

VIN: 1515129 (Born January 26, 1967)

Mileage: 54,xxx (true mileage unkown)

Matching number engine

Rebuilt title (appears to have been some rear end body work)

The previous owner (Karl, or a54atii on here) purchased it in 2006 as a bit of a project and spent a lot of time bring it up to road worthyness.

The car is a wonderfully rare early 1600-2. It is thought to be one of the, if not the, earliest surviving 1600-2 with a sunroof! Even the BMW museum holds an older sunroof optioned 1602.

When I purchased it, it ran beautifully. I drove it 3.5 hours back home without a glitch and the original engine was still singing beautifully in the RPMs. As mentioned, it’s developed a weeping fuel leak out of a seal on the old Solex carb and doesn’t like to run well after my novice tinkering with said carb.

A couple of things Karl (PO) did to her:

- Converted to 12V

- Recaro seats (originals as well)

- Nardi steering wheel

- Silicon Garage (Curt Ingraham) radiator

- Rebuilt brake master

- Brake hoses

- Rebuilt halfshafts

- New BMW Pilkington front windshield & gasket

- New rear windshield gasket

The car is a pretty solid little car, with minimal rust that’s limited to a few spots on the surface and such on the exterior and a few perforations on the drivers front floor panel, passenger rear. spare tire well. The shock towers are in great shape, along with the rockers and other typical trouble spots.

She has a few dings/dents in her that could use some TLC, but for a mostly original car with original paint (besides the rear respray from the incident) it has done very well.

Now the other main note is that her interior bits, exterior trim and such all is currently in boxes. One of the previous owners had torn her down to refresh it seems and she hasn’t been reassembled since. The good news is that almost everything is there and much with duplicates! From the rare chrome early dash bits to many other rare bits (correct front grille, rear badges, washer fluid bottles, etc) she’s just a load of potential waiting to be loved."

Edit: Note that the wheels pictured will be swapped upon delivery (however this is up for negotiation). I have several different options of wheels and you'll come away with a few sets if you'd like.

During the long drive to and from Indy today I was thinking about potentially keeping the whole car and doing the m20 swap into it. If so the 13's will most likley go, and you're first in line.

Please don't do the M20 swap. Let me know... I'd consider buying the '67. It was such a fun 02.

This deserves either a full restoration or a patina'd restoration - but no rat-rod treatment. As a low VIN 1600-2 it's an early representative of the 2002's that followed.

I have driven this one and it's a lot of fun. It is much lighter than my '75.

I agree with you and Jim. I'd have a very hard time cutting this one - it's quite special. The fact it has a rebuilt title makes the idea a little softer, but still not an easy decision. I'd really like to see it restored properly, I'm just not sure I'll be the one able to do it since I'm most likely keeping my 73 auto.

Bump for someone with the time and funds to bring this car back properly!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
