changing 1974 bumpers to 1972 or earlier ?

Recommended Posts

Hey,

New to the forum as looking to purchase a 2002 after having owned many BMW's over the years but now getting ready to retire. Quite a few nice later 2002's available but all have the, in my opinion, not attractive extended 5 mph bumpers. How difficult and expensive is it to convert back to 1972 style bumpers ? Also, anyone have an idea on cost to add on Vintage type a/c to

a 2002? I know, shouldn't worry about a/c, but my 64 year old body prefers a/c in South Carolina !

Thanks,

Mike

Do a 'site search' for "rear euro bumper conversion"...There is a vendor that sells a front and a rear kit that appear to be functional, aestectically acceptable, and fairly priced (about $250 for front and rear). No affiliation, but appears to have passed the scrutiny of some respected members here... a pair of used chrome bumpers appear to vary from about $300 to $500, condition dependent, and not incl shipping. When you get serious, give me a buzz (as I have a couple of the long tail rears and fronts if interested..) My car has them done the period correct way, and its much more expensive than that guy's kits.

If you are in SC, count on an upgraded radiator, also...less stress in traffic..

If you don't mind the later grilles and square lights, it's not

terriffically hard to do, and (imho) looks nice.

Changing to chrome grilles is a much bigger job.

Going to roundies in back is somewhere in- between.

And you're on the right track- buy the nicest car you can find,

and go from there.

Thanks y'all - I figured it would might not be too difficult. I agree, buying a 2002 is just like buying an Austin Healey, buy the best one you can afford !

Many thanks,

Mike
