I finally got the engine pulled out over the weekend! Woo hoo! Big shout out to Austin for bringing beer, help, and motivation! LOL Ive never had a car with the dirt shield still attached to the trans. The dang thing kept the motor stuck to the engine... until I realized what was going on.

Time for the pressure washer!

I hope to get in the new motor and get this thing moving on its own power soon!

Y'know, those look MUCH better than the seats in my daily ;P they don't appear to be torn from those pictures. Hopefully that sunroof seal/window seals didnt leak too bad over the hibernation. The nice thing about California is the climate is such that the cars stay well preserved. My 76 has been sitting in the garage for 19 years still rusting away from good ol' NC humidity.

Hope your engine swap is going well! Looking forward to hearing some updates on this car, for some reason I'm more interested in it than most 02 finds. It's the color I think ;)

Your A/C components look great, hopefully you get that evacuated/converted to r134 at some point :) Used mine yesterday.

Engine bay looks really good too, especially as long as it sat outside. I'm more amazed every time I see a new picture of this car at how well it's held up after being outside for most of it's life.

Sweet! before you drop it in, though, you said you had a low mileage tranny out of your 76. How do you know the 74's is any good? It'd suck to do all this and have a bad trans.

Hmm, as for the originality of this car... Are those seats from a later car? They look like the headrest holes ate in the middle vs to the sides. I wonder if this car retains the crappy seatbelt interlock system that came in 74's.

I have a feeling the trans is good. Im not positive but Im going to give it a shot. The throwout bearing looks good and It moves into all gears fairly well. So we will see :)

Im not sure if the seats are original... but they have been in there for a very long time. They are not perfect and have some flaws but I will use them until I find something better... or have them redone. I have never thought to check on the seats to see if they have the interlock system.

I did find a link for a "how to" on bypassing the system if it has one. If anyone needs it you can find it here.

Since you said the original engine had low compression, that was probably why the P.O. parked it... just a thought.

These later transmissions are pretty durable, just make sure to change the oil. Diff's too while you're at it.

You probably knew to anyway, seeing as this isn't your first "sitting" 02 :P

As for the interlock system, I believe you can unplug the seat sensors and that lets you start the car (tricks the system)... I've never actually looked at that on my car. It was originally a 74 2002A, but now pretty much a 76..even the later system was swapped in.

Side note with the trannies later 02 trannies had Borg Warner syncrhos which were more durable and the output shaft was fine splined. The course splined ones looked like this if not replaced with fine splined parts.

The compression tester I was tryin to use had a faultly schrader valve. We got another one and the motor has great compression... so Im ready to go! Ive been holding off on posting again until I get the motor in. I hope to have it in by the middle of the week. Still want to pull the pan and change a few gaskets. I always forget how much there is to check and replace in the engine bay. I will have pictures soon!

Thanks for the push!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
