I think M42's only came in 318is cars, that looks like a 318i. Am I wrong on that?

Yeah BMW had a 4 door 318i. Same motor though.

All 91 E30 318i cars, (coupe, sedan and convertible) all came with a M42 motor. 92-95 E36 318i also came with a M42.

The sedan didn't come with all the coupe parts, i.e., sport seats, OBC, basketweave alloys, front and rear spoiler, sport suspension, etc.. but still has the same M42 motor. I have a 91 black E30 318i sedan for a DD that brings a smile to my face every time I drive it. There are some great deals on E30 sedans out there compared to the coupes. Price on E30 318is coupes seem to be going up since they have a reputation as a poor mans E30 M3 with the DOHC M42 motor.

M42 was in '90-'91 E30 318i/is and '91-'96(early) E36 318i/is/ti.

M44 was in '96(late)-'00 E36 318is/ti and '96-'01 Z3 1.9
