4x budget??!? What'd the machine shop end up costing you? Torque plate or no? Car looks awesome, I hope you're proud

machine shop might have been 500$ max for the cylinders, leveling the head, seating new valves. Nil else needed.  Top and bottom complete rebuild was another issue...

Mission creep really set in.  I opted to have the KF rebuild and installed.  2k just in the KF rebuild by Gus pfister... installation and tuning was more and a huge labor killer as local experts still struggled with the final tune (no local tii's).  100% new cooling system as it overheated to begin with.  New clutch.  New fuel pump.  electrical tune up (grounding and warm up regulator issues fixed).  I then had a total suspension rebuild including new sways and bushings, and shocks and springs.  Parts were removed, prepped and re-painted.  brake service. driveshaft tune including new center bearing and guibo.

Very happy with the results, but would prefer to forget the cost of it all.  It pays (saves) to have local experts like the Cali guys have.  I had great work done on my car and it runs like a dream (lightning fast dream), but I can guarantee that my final engine tuning  took 4x as long as is would have taken a mechanic experienced with the tii (he knew benz, and give him credit he did reference the manual, and even call IE for final help).  Add to that and countless odds and ends that needed work to give the car final mechanical polish and there was no hesitation in charging me for every one of those approx 70 hours to get the car running like it was brand new after everything was re-assembled.

Just pulled my 73 tii (Colorado orange) out of storage in a warehouse where it sat for 20 yrs.  Thanks for all the info and pics.  I'll be starting the process this summer and your car is a great inspiration!  My goal is to have a driver's car I can enjoy and not go too crazy worrying about being perfect.  We'll see where I end up.  Thanks again!!!!  TR

Gus of Pacific Fuel Injection Service of south San Fran is to check/rebuild my KF. I just spoke with him this evening and I guess he has a pipe leak and flood at the shop over the weekend. I guess everything was off the ground. My pump ended up arriving a few days after the flood. Good luck there. Bad luck is that my builder did not include the warm-up regulator with the pump, so I had to deal with that.

Never a dull moment.

I will also be getting Advanced Distributors to rebuild the Dizzy. They advised I wait until the end for the rebuild. They want the final compression numbers. I will also be running 91 octane, and it looks like my final comp ratio will be around 9.7:1 with 9.5:1 pistons and 0.005 inches (0.127mm) coming off the head. http://www.advanceddistributors.com/

If my memory serves me correct, he actually said 0.005 inches (0.127mm) was how far it was off, but 0.008 (0.2mm) had to be shaved in the end as different corners were off different amounts.

This is key to remember as (0.25mm, or 0.010inches) is the advised max to shave off the face of the head without issues of out of line camshaft bores.  I have 0.05mm left in reserve for a future rebuild without needing some significant machining as above.  BMW also advises that the head not be reduced more than 0.5mm from it''s 129mm +/- 0.1mm total thickness. Also, I read somewhere on this forum (Toby B?) that more than 0.5mm off and the timing chain self tensioner will not work.

based on math from Bill Williams restoration guide, shaving 0.2mm off my head increased the compression ratio by 0.174.  Thus my final compression should be 9.674

Here is some FYI info on ratios that helped me get an idea of the effect of tire size and diff ratios, on speed and rpm.  I did these calculations to help me manage expectations at the track and to compare my current setup options, and help me plan future options.

Classic stock:

1:1 transmission ratio (4 speed in 4th)http://www.bmw2002faq.com/index.php?app=forums&module=post&section=post&do=new_post&f=8

3.64:1 open diff

Michelin XAS 165/80/13 tires (22.4567 inches diameter, stock size)

6000rm

110.1mph

Street "cruising" Setup:

1:1 transmission ratio (4 speed in 4th)

3.64:1 open diff

Falken 615K 195/60/14 tires (22.28 inches diameter, 0.77% smaller)

6000rm

109.3mph

Track setup:

1:1 transmission ratio (4 speed in 4th)

e21 3.91:1 LSD

Falken 615K 195/60/14 tires (22.28 inches diameter, 0.77% smaller)

6000rm

101.8mph

Autocross/Track setup:

1:1 transmission ratio (4 speed in 4th)

e21 3.91:1 diff

Toyo R888 205/60/13 tires (21.78 inches diameter, 3% smaller) I do not have these tires.

6000rm

99.47mph

Autocross setup:

1:1 transmission ratio (4 speed in 4th)

e21 3.91:1 diff

Toyo R888 185/60/13 tires (20.87 inches diameter, 7% smaller)

6000rm

95.2mph

Wiring is original but I did a lot of re-wrapping in the engine bay.

The sway bars are IE 22mm hollow and adjustable.  I am very happy with them, but they make the ride rough over bumps with the poly bushings.

Wow I really need to update this.  Over a year has gone by.

Last August (2013)  I took the car to a local BMW club HPDE.  It was a blast, even if I was not the fastest out there.  Still passed a Z4. More here: www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/144251-tii-at-the-track/

This April 2014 I took the Tii to an Autocross.  I ranked upper mid pack with a wrx STI.  I had R888's and a 3.91:1 LSD.  I also did some Rallycross with a friends Golf.   http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/153609-air-fuel-ratio-sensor-installed-autocross-photos/

This May 2014 I took it to an Atlantic Sports Car Club HPDE.   With a LSD and R888's I was faster than most modern cars, and passed a New Stingray (new driver), and Challenger R/T.  Photos and a video here:  http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/154241-tii-at-the-track-video-added/

If my memory recalls correctly, here is what was done to the car:

- Top and bottom end rebuild of engine.  IE cast pistons.  New oil and water pumps.  New cooling system (new rad, lines, thermostat). More here: http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/144927-my-alignment-specs-post-ie-street-performance-suspension/#entry944604

- Odometer fix

- New motor/tranny mounts

- pedal box rebuild

- New clutch and master

- IE "performance street" suspension setup.  http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/144927-my-alignment-specs-post-ie-street-performance-suspension/#entry944604

- MFI and warmup regulator rebuild by Gus Pfister

- suspension repainted

- freshened undercoating as needed

- new engine lid soundproofing

- re-wrapped engine bay wires

- new vacuum hose, and all new engine

- rear bumper refurb: http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/143548-rear-bumper-rubber-trim-clips/

- new front seat-belts (Driver and passenger)

- new front tie rods and connecting rod

- engine mount bracket inserted

- new rear subframe mounts with IE poly inserts.

- timing chain master link made continuous (clips came off at HPDE event, no ill became of it)

- Rear ride height was lowered to match front.  Much better now.

- Falken 615K's for road use, Toyo R888 for track use.

- LSD (From Aardvark Racing) - e30 small case 3.91:1 30% LSD.  Diff fluid changed Spring 2014.  http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/150391-fun-with-facebook-and-my-limited-slip-diff/

- rebuilt Distributor (Advanced distributors) - beautiful work.

- My dad scanned some of his old photos of 2002's and other interesting things from Mosport and AMP.

Some photos I took today.  I had an incredible run this am along a smooth back road that has few houses, and essentially no traffic.  Just lots of high and medium speed sweepers with some great views.  Love this car.

Just did the oil today.  Don't over-tighten you oil filter.  I think I had the shop do it this spring when I had them also do the brake and diff fluid.
