Driving without 2nd gear

Recommended Posts

Shifter insanely loose and shop is trying to locate parts for shifter rebuild and now car is popping out of 2nd gear. Seems like sometimes it goes all the way in and sometimes it doesn't. Hopefully it's just a linkage issue. Funny thing was that i was so tired of having 2nd gear popping out that I dreaded driving.

Today i started shifting from 1st right to 3rd. Not so bad at all. Kind of enjoyable. Almost seems like a faster shift and i don't have to change to fourth for quite awhile. Getting to 3rd quicker by bypassing 2nd. haha.

Really... call Blunt - he's got all the parts you need to do the shifter rebuild. I just went through it myself, and it's definitely doable if a hack like myself can get it done.

I needed a car, and a hobby....

I went to a recommended shop in Venice on Monday, and it' now Wednesday and he still hasn't gotten confirmation on parts. He's using Southbay BMW. I told him about Blunt but he's old school and prefers to go through the dealer. WTF. I got another referral for a indy mechanic and may just use him.

Is that Venice California?
yup. i was quoted between $325-$400 to do the rebuild. Although it seems that everyone on here says the parts are less than $100. I think that may be true as the indy mechanic said the parts are around $75 and that he'd do the job for $225.

your paying for labor - and any indy will undercut a

official BMW dealer - much less overhead.

besure your indy stands behind his/her work

and do you trust them?

sometimes you get what you pay for ?

sometimes you pay and don't get it.

2nd gear is over rated anyway.

book-

there are about 7 pieces that fail in the shifter mechanism-

2 bushings in the shifter, 2 that hold the platform in place,

one that supports the back of the platform (in different places depending on year)

and 2 that hold the ball into the platform.

Oh, and a pin in the front, on the early shifter. 2 clips on the later style.

There are another half- dozen (mostly shims, springs, and the bushings in the

shift lever itself) that CAN be replaced, and sometimes need it.

It's pretty easy to REPAIR what's wrong with the average shifter-

usually 2 or 3 parts need replacement. While you're in there,

doing the rest is trivial, since it's usually apart and you're usually greasy

anyway.

If one was to REBUILD a shifter, one would remove the transmission, disassemble

it and and replace

the rear selector shaft as the first step.

No one ever does.
