I recently purchased a 1972 02, I have been on this forum since and have already started my parts gathering, the car is a driver a few rust spots here and there but nothing crazy, does need a bit of tlc to bring back to full glory,

MUCH THANKS to the FAQ members whom I have either purchased parts from or learnt a thing or two about these great little cars, no stranger to BMWs but certainly a virgin soul when it comes to the 02.

MY VIN 2579308 can any of the veterans here shed some light on this little guys history, or direct me where I can source some history, it is currently red not sure if that is factory doorjamb stickers are painted, engine bay is black, trunk is funky green coating similar to rust coating stuff, a hint of orange a few places paint is chipping inside door jambs, not sure if this is primer or basecoat.

Let me know if you already managed to get an answer from Andreas, if not I will be glad to run your vin with BMW group archive and see what info they have for us.

I'm no longer affiliated with Maximillian Importing Company in any way, please address any questions directly to them.  -Thanks.

Email sent to Andreas,

CD, doing my homework on this site I have learnt you are one of those highly respected individuals with both knowledge and time for all who need assisstance, I appreciate what time you took to gather the info for me, I am hoping the production date was 1971 but sold as model yr 72, at least the registration card I got from previous owner states 72.

I haven't tried to register it yet it will be done in Fl. I hope I don't get any issues with not having a title the regi card does say transferrable though.

Kpeters I will keep you in mind and post what I get back maybe you can add alittle more to it.

Thanks all

Dear Livio,

Thank you for your email.

The BMW 2002 US VIN 2579308 was manufactured on November 18th, 1971 and delivered on November 25th, 1971 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Colorado, paint code 002..

Any other info that could be added would be greatly appreciated, I guess being a late 71 production would make sense for a 72 model/sale year.

CD anyone??

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
