I looked at your pics via your link, Brad...your '73 looks great. It looks like you really detailed it. I'd like to clean my carpets (they are the original carpets)...have any thoughts re products to use?

Once again, your car looks killer!

Thanks,

Scott

I cheated and got new ones. ;) But there is a lot you can do yourself with the carpets. Woolite Rug Cleaner does an amazing job. If you need more think of renting a steamer. They will pull out dirt you didn't know you had. For maximum cleaning take it to a detailer that has an extractor. They really clean well and make them smell fresh.

For oil/petrol stains use a soft toothbrush and q-tips and get some non-chlorinated brake cleaner spray. Spray the q-tip and dab at the stain. Only if necessary use the brush to agitate. The q-tip and solvent will pull out the stain. The Q-tips will dirty quickly. Use lots of them.

Here's a recent pic.  This is after the RGB Spring Ridge Run in May '14.  Suspension is great!!!

Next projects:

>Door work.  Locks are sticky, seals are going, not sure if the plastic is in place to keep out the moisture, etc.

>Seats.  Gumihar is gonihar.  They need a lot of help.  Vinyl is intact and 100% fine.  It's the stuffing that's the problem.

>ebrake.  There's a cable melted/stuck in the one tube.  I have half of an ebrake.

And a few dozen other things.

Since the suspension refresh in 2011, a few projects have happened with my car.

Little projects:

>Replaced all the coolant and heater hoses, except one or two.  Made sure I had the good BMW hose clamps.

>Went through the doors, including new door brakes, rubber squeegys, and vent window gaskets.  Refreshed the door vapor barriers.

>Purchased and installed the correct 220 kph speedo.  Had the odometer fixed when that broke a week after I installed the speedo (groan).

>Had the distributor rebuilt by Advanced Distributor in Minn.  That made a huge difference in how the car runs.  I learned how to set the timing via Paul Wegweiser's help.  Which is great.

>Did a lot of injection system rehab - new linkage and springs all around.  I even dialed out an idle surge learned how to do it via the FAQ and other sources.

>New fuel lines under the hood.

My friend Jake sold me some great E21 Recaros.  They needed a few little bits and pieces, and Connie, the woman that makes the covers for Eurotrash's hat tray speaker system did a little work on a few of the panels.

I also found some nice period Marchal fog lights.  I bought the wiring kit from Daniel Stern, but still need to install that.  The brackets are from Pierre.

Most recently, I bought some Borrani CMR wheels from John Pantel, Mr Borrani Buyer Guy.  They are the 5.5" version.  Big help from Scott Sislane and Bob Northrup in the North East.  I had the wheels stripped and straightened/trued at Cobra Powdercoating in Maine (which Scott managed for me).  I think I got them on the car about 10 months after I bought them!  I'm still deciding whether I like them...I really like the early alloys I have.

The upcoming projects (as of this minute) are:

>Need to replace the exhaust studs, nuts, and gasket.  The engine is leaking oil down that side - it was that way since I bought it.  But #1 cylinder top stud is starting to leak more.

>Driver's side rocker needs to be replaced.  It is getting bad.  Not looking forward to that one.  Probably will link the parking brake tube to that project, since they both involve metal work.

Hard to believe this was years ago! Car still looks great Scott.

I know - time is flying.  Thanks for the compliment.  I'm doing my best.  What you've done with your tii and your ti are truly inspirational.

Hi Rick - Jason might remember better than I do, but I believe our friend John Blake figured out the paint color (it is paint), and Jason shot it.  I think at that time John has access to some folks that matched the paint to the original stock stuff.  Sorry I don't have a code.  I'll ask John and maybe Jason will chime in.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
