accelerator pull rod came undone

while starting my car today my gas pedal gave out and i noticed that the accelerator pull rod had come undone. there are two locations on the rod where it can be connected. does anyone know which location is correct/best? i chose the 2nd one as it appears the locking friction is higher, hence less of a chance it might come undone again. i also believe this position lessens gas pedal travel distance and perhaps increases gas flow. any thoughts? thanks.

I haven't had a carburated '02 for awhile, but if your linkage came apart, there is something wrong or something is worn out.

Did it come apart down near the pedal box or up by the air cleaner?

If I remember right, there should be a locking clip to keep things in place on either end?

The only way the rod can come loose if if the retaining clip is missing. Choose the position such that the throttle plate is fully open when gas pedal is pressed all the way down to its stop (WOT). On a carburated car gas flow is related to the air velocity, so you are not going to get "more gas" by changing the hole unless your throttle plate was not achieving WOT. I am only familiar with tii's, so there may be a preferred hole to use on your car. On my tii I used the alternate hole (due to roll cage cross bar) and adjusted the linkage accordingly.

it came apart near the air cleaner. i believe the clip is missing. i am going to use a trash bag tie and just twist it. I'll look into getting a locking clip which might be a production. thanks!

Thanks Fred. I'll take a look. What does the clip look like?

Ah Bob, you beat me to it. The clip at the top of the rod is the same as at the bottom where it connects to the pedal box. The clip should be P/N 35411105778, number 8 on the diagram below.

ah, that's a feature, not a bug.

That linkage, while pretty good, isn't indestructable.

I've had things come apart on the street, on the freeway, on the track...

zip ties almost always get you home... in fact, I think there's still

one in there on mine right now.
