Driving down to my mechanic w/a 12 pack to thank him for recharging a batter and WHAMO my stick shift starts slamming to the right. Got to the garage and my mechanic took a peek and looks like i busted my subframe.

anyone in the Seattle area have one I can buy off them? Nothing fancy just need it for my daily drive.

You could weld it back up, that probably wouldnt be to hard.

I'm afraid you didn't "JUST BROKE YOUR SUBFRAME"

it's been cracked for years

Let this be a warning to all o2 owners

inspect the raised arm illustrated here

for cracking, and if cracked, monitor it with every

oil change, or more often to track the growth

of the crack - and plane on eventual teardown for welding

reinforcement plate. Drive accordingly - stop hammering

your take-offs, stop hammering your shifts,

avoid potholes and rough roads.

good luck

good word here Darien, actually I have two 76's this one (the cracked one) is my daily drive which reminds me to carefully inspect the other to see what is down there as well.

Since i am in the middle of moving to other car eventually I am going to see if I can get this subframe welded instead of replaced to buy a little time before switching cars. Probably at that time I will be swapping the best of both parts (and possibly even engines) anyway.

Thanks for those of you who offered to sell a new subframe... we will be in touch if the buy-time-weld method doesnt work out.

If you reinforce it when you repair it,

it'll be far better than a stock one.

ANd last forever.

There are some great pix in the archives

of good ways to do this. There are a lot

of things you can do, and most of them are worth

the effort. It doesn't have to be fancy to be strong.
