  1. That would be terrific, I may or may not have bought, but we can look at one that I know of, if nothing else! Let me know when you know, we're in Porto, and always happy to meet and greet to show around as well. My email is bpeckm at gee mail, if you'd rather.
  2. The ACP (classic car club) in Portugal has information about importing a car. This might be of help? I see that they allow an 80% reduction in emissions, saying that there are emissions test. Importar um clássico WWW.ACP.PT
  3. Impossible to have too many grounds! Ground something, can't hurt.
  4. Yep. In my college days: one of the lucky ones had an 02, and another of the lucky ones had a 912. Those were the days! 'course I lucked into an old (rusty, needed a clutch which I put in, laying on the frozen ground of a NH winter) MB 190sl ($250+some huge speaker boxes I had built....) that I drove for years. Looking back is, uh, sorta painful! But here we are, full of great memories, eh?
  5. Fascinating to me, a newbie here. I just didn't know that "rolling" was so .... actually rolling! Nicely done!
  6. Thank you. I've been trying to determine whether the CKD's were shipped painted, or not. It sounds like you've learned that, good to know!
  7. Thanks for your input. Curious as to why a big no to #2? That crud in the trunk isn't rust, but glue, sloppily applied imho. And as to the knee trim on #1: it is missing on the driver side door, and the seller pointed out that it was aftermarket, as it was glued on and doesn't have bolt holes etc, so could "easily" be removed. Which I would likely do.
  8. So, it's not just two, there's another one but I'm quite wary. The site is Spanish, but it has a PT phone number. The "owner" didn't answer my initial inquiries through the sales website, but when I finally texted, the answers were cagey: "serial number? that would be interesting, you must come see it", "color? some shade of red" and "tell me about the quad headlights? ...no answer. So, not getting good feelings at all, but it's in the right price range and the castles in the background are not far from here. Who knows? Thoughts on the car...???
  9. So, the second very-serious contender is some distance from me, so I've not yet seen it, but the owner has been very forthcoming in providing me with any information I want. It looks pretty durn nice, I just have to take a day to go see it in the Lisbon area (I live up north in Porto) and would probably bite, the way I'm thinking now.... Serial number is 1062184/VN, putting it in a zone that the info available here on FAQ doesn't know about. Email from Andreas Harz puts it as a July 1971 build, with no further information. It has the 12-fuses, is badged as a 1602, longer rear bumpers etc. The original ad had the pretty pictures, the owner was great in sending me pics of the engine bay and the trunk as requested. From what I can see from the pics, original paint in Fjord, interior looks good with the usual dash-cracks, headliner looks good, pillar-mounted seatbelts, engine bay and trunk can use some sprucing (the kind of stuff I love to do...!), but overall looks quite good. The seller has owned it since 2008 but has a new baby, he's been great to deal with, at first with my limited portuguese and then with his good english through WhatsApp and texting. I get good vibes on this one, fwiw.
  10. I've gone hot and cold as to whether to ask, but in my short time on this site I'm impressed with the depth of knowledge and strong "opinions" expressed.... So. I live in Portugal, have had a longtime love affair from afar for the 02 series, and am pretty/somewhat/serious about diving in. I've found a pretty amazing selection of 02's available at prices ranging from 5k to 25k€'s, 1600-02's to 1602's to 2002's, roundies and non, and from "projects" to completely re-done. I've found three that interest me in a realistic (and tight) price range, so I'm going to throw this out for "thoughts and opinions". I'll post each car on a separate post. Oh, and for me it MUST be a roundie... something that harkens back to that '70 that a classmate had and I remember from my college days.... Starting with the oldest, this one is 1061683/VN which shows up in published info as the last of the '68-'71 production in Portugal. Fyi, published info says that 12,744 02's were "built" in Portugal, shipped from Germany as CKD (complete knock down kits) to be assembled here. This one is, as best I can figure out, painted in Reseda. Paint is decent, doesn't look like a re-paint, but it's become clear that Reseda was NOT an original color. None of the PT-built cars have stickers showing the color, as seems standard with US cars. A BIG question, as yet un-answered, is whether the cars were shipped un-painted (which I sorta doubt) and painted in PT. But the Reseda makes me wonder? It is a 1600-02 with 6 fuses, the present owner races Datsuns and has a warehouse full of old cars including a 1600-ti, mostly in parts, and owns a car repair business. He reportedly took this in trade from an old man who had it forever (!!). He seems to know the cars, talking about being careful to keep the paintline break on the roof, etc. The undercarriage has all-new rubber bits, the brake lines and tires have been replaced, and it's reportedly ready to drive. I have not driven it yet, but the shift lever seems very sloppy. I did start the car in the garage, lousy rainy winter day, and it didn't smoke or do anything horrible.
  11. Wow. Just sold for $14,350, by the seller who had bought a year ago at over $21k. Nice car, somebody got a good buy.
  12. Saab and Subaru country, for sure! As good as it gets during the summah, though!
  13. I'm running into 1600/1602's that are higher numbers than the 1061683 that I first looked at. I'm wondering if those posted numbers are correct, I've sent off to Andreas looking for information on a 1602 sn 1062184/VN and a 2002 sn 3629581. The suffix /VN identifies the CKD's assembled in Portugal. Mysteries from the past for sure!
  14. Olá! Are you in Portugal now? I live in Porto and am on the hunt for an 02 here, likely a 1602 at this point. I do know that most who have done it would tell you not to bother, importing into PT is a major pita, BUT, the exception would be for a deeply-loved (that ^ picture!) or a collector/high value car. I can tell you some of the pitfalls that others have warned of if you'd like to email me, bpeckm at gee mail dot com. I'm also on WhatsApp.
  15. hmmm...given "his" other responses, methinks you're onto something....
  16. Onward into battle we (you!) go! Awesome, but really sorry to hear of the piss damage...oy.
  17. I've seen and been around alot of those ceramic fuses, but have never "realized" that there were options as to the conductor. Tanks! Another lesson learned!
  18. As one looking closely at 3 different 1600-02's here in portugal, I am watching this one closely. This is a re-sale on BAT, the present owner paid $20k for it.... let's see!
  19. Just found this thread and had to post, my old BMW R80ST that I painted in Chamonix... now I just hafta find an 02 in that color.....
  20. Evidently not an original color for the '02's, but the Resedagrün is a lovely color
  21. From a newbie to the site, (now researching spare tire and gas tank areas), and now living in PT, and about to pull the trigger over here... A HUGE thank you to all for a very informative thread. This place is awesome!
  22. Reviving yet another "ancient history" of the CKD's assembled in Portugal, this thread is yet another little treasure trove. Great information from @vs_sat (who last posted in 2020) with his photos of the trunk area and questions about the schutz. I am in the market, just researching and looking now, and have a couple available to see. I did go see the one 1600-2 and looked into the trunk, but before I was aware of the schutz differences, and I did not take photos. I'm going back and will certainly look this time! That car was presented as original paint, but it is Resedagrün, so there's that... but bodywork in excellent condition. Very little rust problem with Portugal cars! Another car is quite nice and I need to go see it, have to find the time, a 1602 near Lisbon. Picture of that one, just cuz....
  23. ....so if I understand this correctly, the euro-rat has become the euro-mouse??? That's an impressive mouse-house!
  24. Just WOW! As someone pretty new to the 02's and now living in Portugal, and looking at several 1600's at the moment, this is quite timely in my learning curve, so a big Obrigado to all!
