  1. After using a lot of them for different vintage bimmers, I prefer hushmat as it’s made in the USA and doesn’t have as much of the outgassing odor that the cheaper Chinese Amazon brands do.

There should be a bunch of reference photos if you search a bit.

You can find some here, along with some template examples.

  2. Love the turbo bodywork, would make a fun car.  I would suggest keeping the waist trim and deleting the knee trim (a la turbo).

It appears like the flares are the IE/Kamei version (the bubbled lip), when running the Turbo front bumper with these you need to trim the front flares to sit square on the front bumper.  Not trimming them and tucking the flare ends behind the bumper makes it look off.

Excited to see you have fun with this one.

  3. @JQ02  I'm sure wavetrack has best intentions, but small case 168mm nuances can be tricky.  However, it can be broken down into two simple variables.  1) LSD Pumpkin width 2) Output flange spline type

    1) LSD Pumpkin width:  breaks down into two widths. 5.05" and 5.7"                                                                                                                         5.05" applications : OEM 02 LSD's and E21 LSD's.  Since they were "shorter" end to end the case's side caps need to protrude further inboard.

         5.70" applications : OEM open 02, e21, e30, e36 and LSD versions of the e30, e36.

    2) Output Flange Spline Count: breaks down into two types.  Early "course" 15-count splines, Late "fine" 27-count splines.

Early "course" 15-count spline application : All OEM 2002 differentials (including the rare factory 02 LSD).  These were held in via bolts. **

Late "fine" 27-count spline application : All OEM E21, E30, E36 differentials.  However the only output flange backwards compatible with the 2002 is the E21 output flange.  These were held in with either circlips or retainer clips.

**Therefore if you're interested in an aftermarket pumpkin, you need to verify if they are 5.05" or 5.7" wide, AKA if it was designed as a drop in replacement for the E21 or the E30/E36, chances are that it's 5.7" wide (E30/E36) and therefore also the same dimension as an 02 open diff.  However, given the trick to fitting an E30/E36 LSD into an 02 open case is to insert the pumpkin into the case w/o it's cap, then slide in the cap and bolt it on from the inside of the case ... an aftermarket differential design may not allow for that same trick.  i wouldn't know until I had one in hand to tinker with.

Right now, over the winter break, I'm rebuilding/assembling five of these things.  If you need reference photos or want to call, you're more than welcome to shoot me a PM.

As I said, it's pretty easy when you break it down.  The hard part is getting everyone on the same page on the critical dimensions.

  4. The quality, fitment, and availability of rubber bushings and mounts can vary at any given time.  Your best bet is to utilize a 2002-knowledgable vendor who keeps tabs on the current market.  Most of the bushings can be found OEM, but some (like the front control arm bushings) are documented as having fitment challenges.  Others (like the transmission mount) can be upgraded with bushings/mounts from later cars.

    Welcome to the FAQ!

  5. So apparently there are two people willing to pay over $4,000 for what are $900-$1200 wheels in current market.  More power to them.

The rarer alloy wheels must be even MORE valuable!  Oh man!

Wasn't expecting to go on a 'Slavs' character arc, but here we are.  I predict multiple options under $1500 within a year  (which still leaves an extremely healthy profit margin for someone making cast wheels).

Can you even buy these parts anymore? I cant find them on WN or Rogers....

    1) There was an eastern supplier that provided them to IE and LaJolla back in mid 2010's.

    2) When still at IE one of the projects Jeff had me on was coordinating with Empi to have them remanufactured for the 2002.  They have their own OE-supplier factory.  The minimums were really high, but it was exclusive to IE.  The check was signed, samples were made/tested, and the production turned out really nice.   You can see the heating marks from the induction hardening process on them.
