  1. I am installing lowering springs today- I can't remember though, do the longer springs go in the front or the rear?
  2. just north (towards the transmission) of the second joint in your picture (the first being the one that attaches to the stick shift) is a little collar that slips over the selector shaft into the tranny. slide that towards the tranny and you will see a pin holding those two parts together. push it through and you are seperated.
  3. This is true- if the lamp in the cluster burns, the system will act like a bad alternator. If the lamp never came on, that would the first place I would start.
  4. use some fogging oil or carb cleaner as solvent. Just make sure to flush your cooling system very well after the head goes back on to get an oil based agents out the cooling system.
  5. when I bought my 2002 the trunk was full of what the PO said was 2002 parts. I got down to the bottom and there was a gym bag with a suspicious "L" shaped lump wrapped in towel. It turned out to be just a BB gun, but one of those ones that looks just like 1911 .45. I almost had a heart attack. I guess thats what I get for buying cars in Compton. I bought an MGB that PO said had had the carb just rebuilt, and all it needed was a battery and starter. when I wouldn't start, I pulled the plugs to run a compression test, and when it was cranked, 3 cylinders full of gas pumped out directly into my eyes. Turned out when the carb was rebuilt, a vacuum hose and the gas line had been switched into the carb, so it just poured gas directly through the carb continously. DONT SMOKE AND WORK ON CARS.
  6. a Rover V8 is only 50 pounds heavier than the M10, so dynamics wouldn't be affected much. However BMW did a great job with our cars and the suspension is something I wouldn't mess with too much. straight axle is diffently out of the question. A standard trim Rover V8 puts out 200 horsies, which would be a safe number with a standard limited slip rear and half shafts. swap the engine and tranny, get a custom driveshaft, and let the BMW engineers have their due respect. A wide V8 torque curve would be a lot of fun.
  7. You shold put the thing on a engine stand, get some fresh oil in it, wire the starter to a battery and run a compression test. you will be able to see if the oil pump is working, any clogged passages, stuck valves, and you can see some cold numbers from your pistons. if you have a compressor just run a leak down from the get go, and drop it in with confidence. Just get some fresh oil in if you plan to do any pre-installation testing.
  8. if you have coolant and oil all mixed together, you might have peanut butter as well, which will glog your oil pump, then no oil circulation- and you can guess the rest.
  9. Undid the bad mount. put a bottle jack between the block and the fender to push it away from the mount a little. cut a piece of 1/4 (or 3/8ths, can't remember) in steel that fits inside the cup of the mount. welded up the mount and ground the inside smooth. then wedled the reinforcement plate to the inside of the mount. drop the bottle jack and bolt back up. I have been running like this for three years, with a lot of hard driving without any problems.
  10. this is exciting. going to get my new tii with freshly rebuilt engine, trans, diff. with headers, ansa exhaust, tsw wheels, drop springs and fat sway bars. it now sits in primer, and needs the interior put in, but damn, all the body work is done, and its complete, including 3 pickup loads full of extras. Also included in the deal was a 1969 benelli 125 motorcycle. the total cost? $200 + 12 pack of bass(!) I will post pics on return. Anyone jealous?
  11. he is a really good guy and if you let him know what's up I'm sure he can fab you up something reasonably.
  12. it's obvious you are sold on stuffing as much power in to a 2002 as possible, and as you stated, going around corners is not a high priority for you. If you live in So. Cal. please take a run through Topanga Canyon before changing anything. I know for a lot of people on here, owning a 2002 is really about finding some deserted twisty road on a Sunday afternoon and wringing it out. 2002's arent made to handle massive power, so make sure you brace everything real well, and have some custom half shafts made. I have personally torqued all the bolts between the diff and the half-shaft in half, just getting on the gas real hard. Take a note from Colin Chapman and realize acceleration is not all about power, it's about power to weight. If it was me, I would get an aluminum Rover V8. you should be able to get some serious ponies out of that without much added weight.
  13. If you manage to track down a schnitzer head, take castings of everything! I think we all want one. I, too, want 1300 HP out of my M10.
  14. are you running a resonator? Because if you aren't you may have picked up a harmonic resonance in the exhaust sytem, which can shatter just about anything in the exhaust system. However if the nuts were loose it could have very possibly just rattled around enough to snap the bolts.
  15. folks used to do that all the time its called a velvet coat, because you have the shiny clear of the matte primer. If you get it right it will look like velvet
  16. http://www.2002parts.com/html/differentials.html they redrill them and get you the proper spacers
  17. MR. Gasket- $35, available from local speed shop.
  18. the day I bought my 2002 (4 years ago) the fuel pump died. (it was one of those stupid box/ ticker pumps) replaced it and it have run it on an unregulated pump ever since. Lots of upgrades later, I figured it might be time for a fuel pressure regulator. Looked at the replacement pump the other day and it said 10 PSI, thats no good for a single 45 DCOE. I put the fuel pressure regulator on today, and holy crap that just solved a whole host of problems. It idles better, doesnt die when it sits idling for too long, warms up faster, better lower end response, better throttle response, the revs catch up faster between shifts, and it's just faster all around too. If you are running an electric fuel pump with no regulator- this is a must do.
  19. I hear you- I have been through 3 clutch masters in the last 2 years. (the piston snapped at the pedal connecting ring on one of them) I have lost 2 in Los Angeles and since moved to Michigan and lost another. So I think weather is not a factor.
  20. M10 PWR it is. Will post pic when it's on the tail end...
  21. whoops that was supposed to be 24droad- two for the road all the other variations of giant killer were taken, unfortunatley
  22. OK here are my choices: FSTPOKE 2RDROAD OH2FAST GNTKLLR 2002BMW SCRMN02 I have checked and these are all available. Any comments?
