  1. No. Not sure about differences in the '02 family, but I know for sure that the 2002 pan is different than the E21 320i pan- I think the main difference is the sump portion is a bit smaller on the 320i pan due to the steering rack location. I believe the E30 318i has a similar pan setup to clear the rack, but it's different than the 2002 or the 320i. That said, all of the M10 pans will fit any M10 engine, AFAIK- but you'll want to use the matching oil pump to make sure you get proper oil pickup. You can install a 320i pan in a 2002, but you cannot install a 2002 pan in a 320i- ask me how I know........ Bret.
  2. Check this thread from a couple of days ago for all the details you could ever want........ http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,50/page,viewtopic/t,273319/ (HINT- if you're driving an import of any flavor- Preregistration for the "Show" field is by far the best deal- even if it's not a show car.........) I'll be there along with Mrs Rig, Rig Jr and Rev Al Taylor. I even heard a rumor that Merlin (Sam) would be there............... Bret.
  3. could be the bulb is dying- but I would suspect a bad ground connection somewhere. Bret.
  4. For those not familiar with the event- http://www.carsatcarlisle.com/import/gate.asp I haven't heard of any organized 2002 gathering this year- but don't let that stop you from coming out. If you're gonna be there for more than just 1 day- I'd recommend registering for the "show" field here - http://www.carsatcarlisle.com/import/gate.asp - you don't have to have a "show" car, there's not really any judging- you will have to drive an Import or Kit Car though. Cost is $25 for you to park your car on the show field PLUS admission for 2 people for all 4 days- compare to $5 parking per day PLUS $6-7 per person gate admission if you don't register. Anyway, we (me, Mrs Rig, Rig Jr, Rev Al Taylor and maybe even Merlin) will be there once again this year. Bret.
  5. Hmmm, sounds like something is wrong- do you still have the old chain?? If so, count the number of links and compare. If you loosen the whole oil pump with sprocket attached, then tilt it over enough to install the chain, then tilt it back in place and bolt it down- does that work????? Bret.
  6. Hmm, how exactly are you trying to put the chain on?? You should be able to get it on like this. Install the pump, loosen + remove the nut that holds the pump sprocket on the pump (make note of how the washer/sprocket/nut go on- it's a strange arrangement). Put the chain over the pump sprocket, then put the sprocket back on the pump shaft and replace the nut. This should work- if not, there's something else wrong. Not sure about the guide pin problem, the base of the pump should fit flush against the block when bolted down properly- is it possible that you have 2 of those guide pins stacked on top of each other, preventing it from sitting flush???????? Bret.
  7. Hey Skip, yep, I've got a spare or two- I'll bring one to V at V for you. Bret.
  8. shipping a transmission is pretty easy. I use the double-box method. Pack the transmission in a box that's just big enough for the tranny + some packing material (pieces of cardboard, styrofoam chunks, etc) Tape it securely, then put it in another, larger box using plenty of packing/cushioning material in between the inner + outer box. Pay extra attention to things that could possibly poke thru the inner box- like the output flange and the input shaft- wrap them up before boxing. This works well for me. One thing to keep in mind is that boxes have different weight ratings- look on the bottom of the boxes you plan to use and make sure they are plenty strong enough to handle the weight of the tranny. There is a stamp on most boxes that shows the max weight capacity of the box. You can also use one of those Rubbermaid type containers that's the right size. Available for less than $10 and they are pretty tough. Use plenty of packing material inside to cushion the tranny, and drill some small holes around the top edge so you can secure the top to the box with zip ties. I've also heard of people who wrap the tranny in a plastic bag, then spray the bottom of the rubbermaid container with some of that expanding foam insulation (Great Stuff or similar), drop the bagged tranny in, and then "foam" it in place. Sounds like a good way to do it, and not too expensive. Bret
  9. AFAIK, there is supposed to be a swap meet section for this sort of thing this year. At least that's how I remember it........ Ah yes, here's the linky- http://www.vintageatthevineyards.zoomshare.com/ Clearly stating that there will be a swap meet section this year. Have at it!!!!!!! Bret.
  10. Yep, I bought and used some of that stuff on the rusty floorpan of my E21 Baur about 10 years ago. It seems to be very similar to POR15, it is almost impossible to get off once it dries- so wear gloves and don't drip it on your driveway- there are still a couple of black spots on my concrete driveway. I say go for it. Bret
  11. Got a lift, my new friend Hector and I are gonna install it next week... Great thing about living where we do is that the building restrictions are pretty slack- we're zoned as agricultural anyway, so officially this is a farm storage building- maybe tractor repair too..... Bret.
  12. It's almost done!!! 30x40x14 steel shop building. This will be where I spend most of my waking hours from now until............whenever........... Bret.
  13. Around here, they leave everything in/on the car except the catalytic convertor. They punch holes in the gas tank, oil pan and tranny pan (if automatic), cut rad hoses + PS hoses to drain the fluids. If you hope to find something like that, you'll probably have to be there within a day or two after they set the car out. I've spoken to lots of people at the yards who pretty much make a living buying parts and reselling on Ebay and the like. Bret.
  14. Sure, why not? It's pretty simple actually. The only thing to consider is that you'll probably have to run premium gas in it due to the High compression ratio. But, have you ever driven a car with injected tii engine?? I suspect you haven't or you would not be asking this question..... Bret.
  15. http://raleigh.craigslist.org/car/153695809.html This looks to be right up your alley!!! Bret.
  16. You had me going for a minute- I was thinking "Import Carlisle hasn't been around that long......" then it dawned on me.....DUH! I'll be there again, as usual. I agree with Derek that this event is in dire need of some sort of boost. I was hanging out with the Grassroots Motorsport magazine guys last year and we talked about this very thing. I believe that if they could get a better vendor turnout, the event would be alot better off. Maybe cut the price for vendor spaces in half (or more)- that should help get some more folks interested in hauling the stuff out there and sitting in the rain for 3 days trying to sell it- and constantly hearing "I saw 5 of those things sell on Ebay last week for 1/10th of that price". I don't see why they can't do some advertising- this show is not well promoted at all IMHO. I have never sold alot at the Carlisle Import show, some years I buy more than I sell. At least a couple of years I've been completely shut out- sold -0-. I still enjoy it, and will continue to go- one reason is that it's become a tradition- we go to Carlisle for this weekend, then on Sunday we load up and drive to Upstate NY to visit my Grandma for a couple of days, then haul back to NC. Bring your rain gear. Bret.
  17. Matt, in your experience, were all 2002 fenders welded at that joint or did they braze them with some sort of brass filler at some point in production? I've seen a bunch of 2002 fenders that were brazed at that spot. And it seems like 90% of the fenders that were replacements of the original got welded and then filled with plastic filler- good ole american hack craftsmanship!!! Bret.
  18. Stupid question, but what's the URL?? Isn't it www.mytii.com or something like that?? Bret EDIT: Sorry, this was supposed to be under the tii registry update post....
  19. I guess you could leave them off- but you wouldn't want to get a small rock or an acorn or other piece of debris in there- it could possibly make the belt jump off the pulley, I guess...... Bret.
  20. Here you go Brent: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/R90SWORLDNET/ It's a yahoogroup mailing list thing. You have to sign up for yahoogroups if you havent' already, then subscribe to the group and you'll start getting emails (or just choose Digest mode and get one list of messages a day). Bret.
  21. All, the list moderator for a Beemer (R90s) yahoogroup that I am subscribed to is setting up a group purchase of a new R90s book coming out in March. Here is his original post from the R90s yahoogroup: --------------------------------------------------------- Members: I am going to make a group purchase of the new Ian Falloon Book "R90S" for anyone who wishes to own this book. This will save you some money. I can purchase large quantities of this book from the publisher and pass on this savings to you. I am not making any money by doing this. I am making the book available for $19.25 shipped to your door vs $24.95 +S&H list. This is a one time offer that will save you about $10.00 per book. Please have your envelope postmarked by Jan 15th, 2006. This is a one time offer. You can download an order form at: http://home.jtan.com/~joe/r90s_book_order_form.pdf The order form has a bit more description of the book. Whitehorse has more information on the book. http://www.whitehorsepress.com/produ...oducts_id=5334 or search on R90s at the Whitehorse site. Happy reading. Mac Kirkpatrick drbeemer@snip.net Glenmoore, PA ------------------------------- Please don't contact me for more info- it's all spelled out on the order form. If you are not familiar with the R90s, a google search will help. Basically- it is one of BMW's best (IMHO) bikes, it is often referred to as the original superbike. Made from 1974-1976 (you know, back when 2002's were new!!!), it only came in 2 colors, "Silver smoke" or "Daytona Orange". I've got a '74 and a '75 R90s, both Silver Smoke- they are AWESOME!! Thanks!! Bret.
  22. 73 is the last year of round taillights. AFAIK- there were no '73 factory turbos- the first year was '74, therefore the square taillights. Bret.
  23. Did you buy it from a guy named Brian by any chance?? I'm about 30 minutes SE of Raleigh, and have a bunch of 2002's but none that look that nice. Bret.
  24. What exactly did you replace?? Just the dist. housing gasket? Did you replace the o-ring around the dist. shaft? Did you replace the special o-ring washer that goes under one of the dist housing bolts??? The last one is VERY important, and often overlooked. Are you sure the oil is not leaking past an exhaust stud and dropping onto the manifold?? A common problem with loose studs...you should be able to pull the leaky stud out, put some loctite or something on it and reinstall to help with the leak. Make sure the threads are clean + dry before you do the loctite trick. Oh, and yeah- it's possibly to toast an engine with messed up timing- need to fix that soon. Bret.
