  1. and it's the very first one!!! Though Satch didn't really address your letter in his reply. I tend to feel the same way about O'fest, WAY too much $$$ for what you get in return (Not including hotel $$$). Satch said he enjoyed the good food and good conversation- but $200 worth!!!??? I know the CCA volunteers work their asses off, and I appreciate that, but it's just gotten more and more expensive over the years, and it seems like it's an annual gathering for the folks in the club who spend all year planning for their next O'fest. I'd rather get together and eat hot dogs + hamburgers and BS about cars with folks who think the same way. Sub-$100 basic registration for the whole week (should include 1 dinner and some other light luncheons, plus the basics) and/or ~$20 "day passes" NOT including meals, etc sounds about right to me. Of course there should be reasonable fees for extras like Autox, rally, Driver's school, etc- but they're already charging extra for those on top of the current registration fee. Bret.
  2. I have a friend who has several NOS 2002 Owner's manual "supplements"- they look like an 8-10 page section of owners manual without the cardboard cover. I didn't get a chance to look at them as much as I would have liked to, but they are the real deal. Does anyone know if these are rare, NLA, worth anything?? If there's enough interest on this board- I'll either get them from him and offer them up here, or have him do the same. Thanks, Bret.
  3. Fact....posts made by people who use their real name (or their usual nickname) are worth 10000000x posts made by anonymous pud-whackers. That is all. Bret. ps- what's a heatgasket?
  4. silicon is what they use to make computer chips- it's also a valley in California. silicone is what they use to make RTV sealants, Pam Anderson's tits, Ivana Trumps lips, etc. The statement "silicon will make your engine leak" is BS. That said, Silicone RTV sealants are WAY overused, usually by hack or inexperienced mechanics- but when it's used properly and sparingly- it's pretty good stuff. Most BMW gaskets should not be used with any type of sealant anyway. Bret.
  5. NOOOOO! Stop spreading these rumors. Al is totally insane. :P Seriously, if he doesn't return your email, there is probably a reason. Reasons may range from things like: he doesn't have the part you inquired about, he *might* have the part- but it's on a car that's buried in the weeds and he doesn't like snakes so it might take some time to check it out, he is away at the track for the weekend, he's on another of his westward journeys in a $300 car- possibly planning to pickup another car and haul it back using the $300 car as a tow vehicle, he's stalking a girl at the Barnes & Noble bookstore because he saw her glance at "Classics + Motorsport" magazine and he thinks she might be the ONE!!!
  6. The only difference is that the 325e tranny will have 2 holes in the bellhousing to accomodate the speed + reference sensors used on the eta motors. There is no problem using the 325e tranny on the 325i engine, but you could not use the 325i tranny on the 325e (unless you drilled out the holes for these sensors). Also- it should not be hard to find ths shift mechanism- there are lots of these trannies out there. If you need to shorten the linkage, you'll want to get the stamped steel shifter support, as the other type is a cast aluminum "I" beam, and would be more difficult to cut + weld. Bret.
  7. http://photobucket.com/albums/v11/rigmaster/02articles/ Some "old" car mags that I scanned/copied a while ago- I posted these up some time ago, but I thought many of you guys have probably not seen them. Happy reading!! Bret.
  8. PREACH ON BROTHER!! You really DON'T want to go thru the process of filing a claim and fighting with the shipping company about the value, whether it was "insufficient packaging" or not, etc..... There's a guy on one of the E30 boards fighting about this right now- he bought some really nice front seats- the shipper put them both in 1 big box and shipped them UPS (no wrapping/packing inside the box- pretty much just the 2 seats....). Now the seats arrived damaged, the shipper says it's not their problem, the buyer is pissed at the shipper- but somehow forgot to save the box for the damage claim- now everyone's pissed at everyone. Package was insured, but UPS won't even consider a claim without the evidence (packing material), and even if they had the box, I'm pretty sure UPS would simply claim insufficient packaging was the problem- they use that one alot!! I often wonder why I spend so much time packing stuff- but I've not had a damage claim in a LONG LONG time (knock wood).....and I often get comments about the secure packing job for things I've shipped. It pays off in the end. If you're shipping anything to anyone anywhere, either spend the time to properly package it, or don't send it at all!! I'm serious about this.... Bret.
  9. Hmm, what's an "A panel repair panel"??? If it's something that can be cut from a clean parts car- someone on the board surely has one that would work for you- hell, someone may even have a new one sitting around if it was a common rust spot. I've just never heard that term used......... Bret.
  10. Quick answer- No. Assuming you're asking if you can tell what size (diameter) pistons you have in the engine- you cannot tell without pulling the head. Once you pull the head then you can clean off the top of a piston to see the size stamped there. The 2.0l from a 77-79 320i will use the same head gasket as the 2002- though the head gasket "set" will include different gaskets for things such as intake, FI, etc- so just get a 2002 head gasket set unless you are running 320i FI. Bret.
  11. Yes, they should be the same- they are almost DCOE copies.... Bret.
  12. Depending on where you are, you should be able to find someone to haul it off for free- or at least cheaply..... It's not that hard to winch a 2002 shell up onto a roll-back flatbed wrecker. There are folks around here who will haul off almost any scrap steel for free- remember they get paid for the steel. Before I got my car trailer, I had a local guy haul off a couple of cars for me- he had a steel deck flatbed and got them gone with no problem. Scrap steel prices have been pretty good for a while- I got $5.00 per 100# about 2 months ago, but it has dropped to ~$3.00 now (those prices are what the steel recycling yard pays when you bring it to them). Still worth the trouble for someone to haul it off. Call around to some of the metal recycling yards in your area, and see if they can recommend anyone to haul it away. If that fails, call some of the local tow companies and ask if they are buying scrap cars (!!!), who knows, you might actually make some $$ off the deal..... Alternatively, you could chop it into about 4 pieces, and load it all in a pickup truck and take it yourself. Bret.
