How to take out the thingy from the thingy

So I've got the diff off and am getting ready to put in the 320i LSD. But the bracket that holds the diff to the back of the car has those bushings in it. I have new ones from Ireland, but how do I get the old ones out?

Unlike the other bushings, these seem to have a metal ring around them that makes them damn near impossible to remove. What's the trick here?

My trusty old method of burning them to a crisp doesn't seem like it will work here.

Side question: Now that I have the old cover on my new diff, do I still fill it with oil up to the fill point? Anyone know how much that is in quarts?

Sorry to bombard with questions.

Thanks in advance!

The professional mechanic has a press.

For the rest of us roll like what Optimus Prime would do.

After burning out (melting) the rubber, take an open end hack saw tool and cut through the retaining ring left over. If you look closely you will see it. This is a press-fit part and is a bitch to remove. But by cutting through it, you can relieve the pressure and pop it out with a drift hammer.

Clean up and install the new two-part urethane. Don't forget to lube the bushings upon install.

Keekawl kole kaw chee.

(lame attempt at a sound FX but you fanboys know what I mean)

But what do I know

Excellent! Thanks for the info, link and sound effects (yup, I got you entirely on that one). I'll give the burn it and bash it method another try, but this time I'll add hack it to the list as well.

Cheers, mates!

Transform, and roll out!
