How to identify my 5-speed

First of all, thanks to everyone who participates in this board. It's been a big resource for me and, I'm sure, others.

Question: Is there any way to tell - visually from under the car - what kind of 5-speed I have? I was under the car this morning and didn't see any markings, but it was mighty cramped and greasy under there. Can I tell visually whether I have a close ratio 5-speed or a 245/4? Do the cases look different? Is there anything about the performance that would jump out at me?

8 bolt guibo, early, 6 bolt guibo, late

there is a spacer of about 2.5 " to house the 5th gear...

look for the 6 bolt guibo tybe with mechanical speedo.

What does "early'' vs. "late'' mean? I thought that only related to 4-speeds?

That looks like a hydraulic clutch slave cylinder, no?

5 speed for sure, looks like the late model with 6 bolt guibo.

can you post picture of the speedo attachement at the tail and the output flange ?

I think it's an od from an e21. Cr boxes have the old type slave cylinder, yours has the new type.

Not sure that these additional pics will help. Tough to get a good angle. But they're all at the link below. And no the tranny does not go with the '71 Sahara...not yet anyway.

Looks like the standard 4 speed box.
