engine and drivetrain spacer required?

Is it required or recommended to use the spacer between the carb (Weber) and the intake manifold? I have seen pics with and without. Mine is cracked and was going to replace it until I saw a pic of an engine on ebay without one.

heat shield so fuel in the carb doesn't boil on a hot day. If you don't use a spacer and don't have any problems with hard starting on a hot day, you don't need one. If you do, you do.

i think an insulating spacer between carb and manifold is preferred, but with weber downdraft on the 2002 the carb is already too close to hood without any.

As an additional thought, I have seen some folks employ several gaskets., not just for heat related issues. Subject to space limitations (that hood sure is low) I have heard the notion that the additional height materially affects the torque characteristics of the engine - sort of like tuning via intake manifold length.

I don't necessarily subscribe to this theory, but I am unable to dispute it.

i think i will take it off until next summer, since the weather is breaking, and see what happens. it may solve some idle issues i've been having.
