Original 2002 air filter on a Weber?

Hey guys is this possible to do? I know that my old Solex has an oval opeing and the Weber doesn't. Also, will I lose performance v. the square ones most Weber people use? And if I do use the original, how important is the peice that runs to the snorkel, mine is missing.

I don't often see people with the old air box's, are they rare, or just nobody likes them? Mine is grey and appears to be original, is the correct?

Thanks, Jordan

JAM Engineering, a long time Roundel advertiser has them in stock. $35 or so if I recall. Google them.

Good Luck,

Try the search. This topic has been addressed ad infinitum. Tin snips, a little imagination and some foam to take up any open gaps . . . Someone posted pictures of a dandy red one. Rimspoke?

I would be concerned about the weight of the air filter housing. As you know, the original is supported by brackets from the base of the manifold. Most of the modified versions seems bolted onto the top of the carburettor. Dont think the carb was designed to handle that load, but maybe others have superior knowledge.

Good luck

For Weber dgav dfav 32/36 38/38 aircleaner adapter for using a stock solex 2bbl (2 barrel) DTITA airfilter housing.

http://www.redlineweber.com adapter #99004 351, gasket #99005 069

http://www.jameng.com kit #0-2200-0-209

Trim off the spotwelded funnel portion from under the 2bbl airfilter housing LEAVING the flat portion on for strength. LEAVE the inner funnel INTACT.

If you're lucky the easiest way is to cut one slot and wind/twist off the flange with a large pair of needlenose vicegrips. It's similar to opening an can of sardeens. Then carefully grind the rest smooth and paint to taste.

For a gasket Trim and re-use the stock solex > airfilter rubber gasket to fit.

BMW #

If done cleanly this allows the filter housing to fit and attach as original WITHOUT having to drill holes and bolting to the carb!

It'd be nice if someone would post pictures of before during and after.
