No turn signals or flashers 72 tii

Recommended Posts

Read a lot of posts here.

I had turn signals a few months ago but no dash signal.

Then the turn signals quit.

I had flashers but not indicated on switch. Found bulb in flasher switch was bad.

I checked fuse first. 12v

I borrowed a relay from a friend with same year and model. No change.

Read some posts here and opened relay to check contacts, all good.

Opened turn signal switch and checked and cleaned.

Then I had turn and flasher but no dash.

Someone added a ground to body on back of cluster. Checked that, ok.

Seemed intermittent and wondered about the ignition switch. Used a little PB blaster on key and lubed switch.

Key turns on fuel pump.

I checked power at relay socket and flasher socket. There is power but not sure which pins are supposed to have power. I do have a blue book with the Tii wiring diagram. Diagram is so tiny it's hard to read.

When  I thought I had everything except dash it all stopped, nothing is working now.

I can't figure out what changed.

Appreciate some help.

Gary

The first place to check would be the grounds at the front signals. Those lights ground through the two retainer screws. Check for rust, clean. If ratty, replace with stainless screws.

Removed screws and cleaned 2 replaced 2. No change. Thanks

Gary, so I thunk some more.. your hazard switch also has to be working to get flashing.

And there’s a wire you could’ve bumped when you looked at your instrument grounds that goes to the flasher.. ??

I had all sorts of weird stuff happening with my flashers and turn signals.  Swapped out the relay for an electronic one and all order was restored.  I also put in a new hazard switch but that was not part of the problem.  It just wouldn’t stay depressed.  I’m not the original author of the thread below but is the one that helped me.  Good luck!

The turn signals' wiring passes through the emergency flasher switch, and problems inside that switch can affect turn signal operation, as both systems use the same flasher relay.  Turn signals function only with the ignition on, while emergency flashers can function all the time.

I wrote a column on troubleshooting and dismantling/repairing the emergency flasher switch (pushbutton style); PM me if you'd like a copy.  That may be your problem.

Some success.

I own an E9 3.0CS.

It has the same flasher switch.

I removed from coupe and tired in 02.

Now have flasher and turn signals.

Still don't have light in instrument cluster.

I know the blub is good.

Mike is going to send me a write up on fixing a flasher switch.

See what that's like but may have to buy a new one.

The wiring diagrams that Visionaut sent are not the same as mine. May be a Tii thing or 72 MY.

The electronic relay idea Marsattacks sent I like but here again the connectors are different.

I'm going to remove the cluster and see if I can light the light for the turn signal.

Thanks for the help.

  • 3 weeks later...

Never could get the light for turns signals in the cluster to work.

I took the cluster apart and checked all.

Not the blub or the blub holder.

I give up as I don't know how else to troubleshoot.

Ordered a new Hazard switch but the wrong one came.

New one should be here in a couple days.

> $100.
