Translating new wiring harness to key switch pinouts

Recommended Posts

Hey folks-I purchased a new wiring harness off eBay that was advertised as specific to the BMW 2002. My old harness had many crumbling wires. It’s pretty well made, and has each wire labeled which is nice, but I could use some help getting it over the finish line. I need to translate the shown connector to the ignition key switch.

1-does anyone know the pin out of the keyed ignition switch, with the physical positions of the pins?

2-I have all the relays from the original wiring harness, but am not sure of the wiring diagram as it relates to key switch+relays. Thanks for any tips!

@rjd2 Here's a sketch of the ignition switch connections.

The fuse and relay connections may be different depending on the model year and fuse box (6 or 12 fuse), but the basics are the same for all i.e. red wires always hot, green wires switched hot, black/white wire to starter, violet wire to ancillary devices (wipers, horns, radio, etc.) when the ignition is "on".

Looks like your new wiring harness has some interesting colors that will need to be identified and documented to correspond to the factory wire color codes.

this is amazing, and exactly what i need! thanks! yes, the new wiring harness is not color coded like the factory harness. the good news is that each wire in the entire harness has it's terminal printed right on the insulation, so there's no guessing which red goes where, for instance.
