Exhaust manifold studs: shoulder or no?

Go to solution Solved by 2002iii,

I ordered a set of exhaust manifold studs from Pelican and received continuously threaded studs with no shoulder. Are these ok to use or should I find some studs with a shoulder? I've read conflicting statements on the internet. Thanks!

Shoulders are better, as iii mentions, because the things can just sneak up into the head.

I have found them in local hardware stores- the bigger Troo Valyoo and Ace have

assortments of 'automotive studs' for a couple bocks apiece (ooch) but they're shouldered.

Resist the urge to use long setscrews- they break.  Ask me how I know this...

nah, you can figure it out.

Ok thanks guys. I did find some at the good local hardware store but the head side only had 10mm of threads. They would probably work but I'll just reorder the correct OEM ones and work on other projects in the meantime.

Cheers
