Engine for sale

Pdxguy

Recommended Posts

Price: $200
Location: Portland OR 97213

Description:

Ended up selling the 1969 2002 body that went with the engine. I bought the car in pieces, so cannot attest to its condition other than what I was told. Seller runs a BMW repair shop and the car was "Project #5". He said it ran well, no issues. Not sure how much value it has. I do know I am paying to store it, and it is too heavy to throw over the fence into the neighbor's pool. Asking $200, if unrealistic let me know. Includes everything as seen in the pictures.

Interested if it is a 2.0 motor

With a type 121 head, it “looks” like a 2.0-liter engine, but head type is not 100% dispositive as to the block, because people unknowingly — sometimes knowingly — do crazy things. The block’s casting date is March 24(?), 1970 (“24(?)C 70”), so it didn’t originate in a 1969 model year 2002. And since the head and oil pan are currently blocking access to the cylinders (an 89mm. or greater bore represents 2.0-liter motor), the engine number, same as the original chassis’s VIN, will positively confirm whether it originally appeared in a 1602 or a 2002. I’m guessing it has an engine number.

Focusing on the engine block’s casting date, I’d expect the engine number to be 15xxxxx for a 1.6-liter engine and 16xxxxx (or 25xxxxx for 2002A’s) for a 2.0-liter engine. The engine number appears on a machined boss, just above the starter motor, at the left rear corner of the block. Illustrations as to the engine number’s location appear in:

Steve

Sept 1968 US 1969 model production begins. BMW 1600 VINs begin at approximately 1565738; BMW 2002 at 1662859. '02s assembled before 1 Jan 1969 are known as “first series” 1969’s, and are essentially identical to the 1968s. The post-1 January cars meet new EPA/DOT regulations that took effect on that date. These “second series” cars begin with VIN 1664761.

Based on "These “second series” cars begin with VIN 1664761." and the date "Casting date is March 24(?), 1970 (“24(?)C 70”)" good chance it is a 2.0

Information about 1969 model year ‘02’s tells us little-to-nothing about this 1970 engine block.

@Pdxguy simply needs to look at the engine number (VIN) stamped into the block. It’s definitive. If you cannot find the engine number (VIN) on a block, the Engine Identification article linked in my prior post was intended to identify the location. The photo below, provided by you, @Pdxguy, circles the engine number in red.

Odds are that the block is originally out of a 2002, and a 121 head further indicates a 2.0-liter engine, assuming the head is original to the engine — you don’t show the head’s casting date. And by shear production numbers, 2002’s out-number 1600-2’s and 1602’s in the U.S. But there is no guessing required here!

The engine block, cast in March 1970, came out of a 1970 car, so it could not possibly have been original to a 1969 model 2002. It might have most recently been in a 1969 model, but it’s engine number will tell its origin story!

My best guess is VIN 167xxxx ….

Steve

Bit of a computer luddite. I can get the picture to attach, but not to automatically open.

1. VIN #1675437 so 2 liter

2. Casting date is March 24(?), 1970 (“24(?)C 70”) so came from a 1970

Lunarkingdom, you asked whether it turns freely. Yes, it turns freely

Thanks,

Dennis
