  • DFMC changed the title to Set of Grilles (up to '73 - Aluminium)

All round taillight 2002’s (December 1967 through August 1973), not just tii’s, received anodized aluminum side grilles with 7 black slats, as shown in your photo (below). Early examples (December 1967 thorough approximately December 1969) had black-painted slats while later round taillight 2002’s had black-anodized slat covers glued and crimped onto the underlying slats. (Black-anodized slat covers remain available from BMW.)

Grilles without blacked-out slats were used on 1600-2’s, distinguishing 1600-2’s from 2002’s.

The second through ninth photos below are of a May 1968 brochure for 1600-2’s and 2002’s. This is shortly after the 2002 was introduced. A Florida 2002 shows off it’s partially blacked-out grilles while a Bristol or Polaris 1600-2 displays it’s all-silver grilles.

GLWS,

Steve

OK but are these deep or shallow bucket?  When were the shallow buckets cut in?

The shallow side grilles existed solely for U.S.-spec cars from January 1972 through August 1973. All earlier U.S.-spec grilles and all rest-of-the-world grilles (March 1966 through August 1973) were deep grilles. Although I’d guess a few shallow grilles found their way to the U.K., and other countries, by odds, grilles outside of the U.S. are almost always deep grilles.

In addition, because the shallow grilles were only fitted to a small portion of the global market, production of replacement shallow grilles ended fairly soon after ‘02 production ended — but deep grilles continued in production — at least sporadically — for decades. This means that for one of the most easily damaged ‘02 parts, the front side grilles, deep grilles often replaced damaged shallow grilles, for decades!

Hi Kam

The set I have is for cars up to Aug '73.  They are 'deep bucket', one side grille is brand new, the other and the kidney are in excellent condition.  But for a couple of small dings, the kidney is in virtually new condition.

The photos show the grilles without black bars.  The new black covers for the side grilles, and black bars for the kidney are available for a small additional cost.

Regards

David
