There is a body plug on the passenger side firewall behind the glove box that suits this need perfectly. Photo courtesy of @'76mintgrün'02

I had to cut the hole you're looking at in Paul's photo.

There is a hole through the firewall there, but the aluminum-lined heat-shield in the engine bay and the tar-mat-cored, open-cell-foam-lined fiber-board are in the way.  (as are a couple of brake lines)

It leaves a lot of jagged edges, so I made a rubber grommet for it.

I ZiP-tied the computer up by the hole.  (Only computer in my car).  Only zip-tie too, maybe.

My installation felt a little intrusive, but I have made good use-of that hole.  It was enlarged to permit passing the O2 sensor through and now serves as a passage way for wires and vacuum lines.

For power, I took the keyed source from the three gang 'plug' under the dash, using one that'd power a fuel pump; the constant power I took with a double spade connector in the incoming side of the relay feeding my driving lights.

It uses an old VW inline fuse, wired direct to the battery.

Oh wait... this is a thread about a starter problem.

Oh well... fun to reminisce.
