Compression ring material?

Recommended Posts

I'm asking around the internet for rings (with 3 piece oil ring) that match the spec of my Mahle pistons. One guy is asking what material the top groove ring is. He says he can do chrome or regular cast iron. Does anyone know anything about this? Chrome or cast iron?

Warn me now if what i'm doing is sketchy.

Rumor around the paddock is that cast iron will seat well, is tolerant of less than perfect bores,

and is less durable in high heat/pressure/rev/long life situations.

Chrome is(it's just a coating) very durable, but many have had a hard time getting it to seat in bores

that are less than perfect, or if they don't break it in like they stole it.

I have used both, and had little trouble with either- admittedly, I used chrome with

freshly bored blocks, and iron on the 'redneck rebuild' rering jobs.

You could tell your guy what's going on, and ask his recommendation!

fwiw,
