I have now done 4 turbo engines ( mine and 3 for customers). I restored my own car and have worked on 4 others. I am in the vintage race car restoration business and don’t usually take street car work but because turbos are unique and a personal passion I do work on them. Our shop is in Redmond WA.

How long have you had your car? What is your chassis number? Where has the car been?

It is 4290154.  My father bought it in the Boston area around 1986-7 and gave it to me as a graduation gift.  I decided to keep it rather then drive it so it sat in a barn at our place in New Hampshire for about 20 years.  I started it from time to time and then just rotated engine so it would not seize.  About 12 years ago the place in NH was sold and car shipped to me here in WA where it sits in my garage/shop in West Richland.  It has something like 60k km on it.  Matching engine number and pretty much original.  We had it painted - now many years ago.  Have the stripes in a box and never got them on.  I just got the chrome trim back on.   I just spent some time getting it running again after 10 years of sitting.  Runs ok but valve train sounds noisy to me so I don’t want to run it much until someone has a good look at it.  Car originally came out of Italy and I believe owner before us imported as grey market.  I think the right rear quarter panel may have had an incident at some point and car shipper dented rear panel when it came out here (bumper was off) so I had to get that repaired which meant a new rain panel.  I would love to restore it fully but not sure I can convince my wife to spend the funds to do it right so for now I am focused on mechanicals so it is not decaying.  Woukd like to discuss what it might cost for various levels of restoration.  509....554.....9891.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
