I agree.  Only the 1975-76 style seats have the closely-spaced supports. This seat, albeit with a slightly different seatcover in the e21 application, appears to have been designed for the new e21 and then “shared” with the ‘02 in the final years of its production.

 

U.S. 1969 through 1974 model seats used widespread headrest supports (yes, many 1969 models manufactured before January 1, 1969 lacked headrests).  U.S. 1966 through 1968 model seats had no headrests.
