Gearbox nut vs socket man

Naz

Recommended Posts

I would like to replace the seal in the gearbox but I can't seem to find a socket that fits. I just picked up a 27mm socket thinking for sure it was the right size but nope. 29 mm was too big to fit into the hole to reach the nut. It looks like there is a notched sleeve in there that I perhaps need to remove first?

Naz,

There is a groove on the output flange at the 9:00 position in your picture. You can see the tab of the locking ring deformed into that groove.  The lock ring is soft metal...take a small flat-bladed screwdriver and pry the tab out enough where you can grab it with needle nose pliers or just use the screwdriver.  Make sure you replace/reuse that lock ring.  It is important.

An air socket is sometimes too thick to fit into position, but a standard socket will... the air wrench may break the socket, though.  Many folks simply grind down the outer diameter of the air socket until it fits into the hole.  Or you can buy a thin-wall socket...but they are expensive and hard to find.

Good luck!

Looks like I have a getrag 232. Gearbox was replaced and it indicates that it came out of a 1600. Not sure if that's true? Realoem doesn't show a 232 on any of the models I searched.

The rear seal I pulled out is a 40x55x8 but everything indicates 38X55X10 on realoem. It looks to have been changed in the past with the wrong size seal perhaps? The bearing says made in Japan so someone's been in there.

Any thoughts?
