Door striker (2 types?)

That new one looks like a redesign to try to make the part cheaper to produce. Note it’s several smaller/simpler sections now that look to be welded together vs the much more complex to produce single piece.

 

No idea what the function/purpose of that extended ‘wing’ on the bottom is though…

Its very different for sure. Feels heavy and strong - based on force vectors that new arm is to restrict motion of the latch post when the door closes. However I'm not sure that I've seen/heard of failures of that post. I've seen (and experienced) cast bracket failure but not the post itself. Others may have had different experiences. 

Also noting that these striker plates were used on many BMWs, it's possible a different model had different failure points (due to heavier doors on newer models for instance).
